I have a 98 z71 sierra and when I shift it into drive to speedometer doesn't work and it wont automatically shift out of first, what could be causing this?

tranny cooked .

solenoid,

computer,

broken wire,

possible speed sensor ,

 

 

i cant think of anymore ,,,its early ,,,

 

take it to a tech and let him diagnose it ,,,,

 

what is the oil level and condition ?

This happened to my cousins tranny. Turned out it was toast. Rebuild time!

Its a speed sensor problem most likely. If the CPU doesn't know how fast its going it don't tell the trans to shift.
