Steering wheel audio controls

I have a 2016 2500 WT IO3 no onstar wifi etc.. As basic as you get. I am looking at replacing the radio with the Pioneer AVIC 5200 NEX. I would love to have steering wheel controls as the volume buttons are very small. After looking into the wiring the factory plug to the clockspring has 10 wires truck side and only 6 are used wheel side. The Pioneer has a wired remote 3.5 mm plug. So if I add the buttons and isolate the 3 wires needed and just cut the wires going into the plug truckside and cap because they are not used anyway. Use 3 of the 4 empty circuits through the clockspring and send the wires directly to the pioneer. This way I have not altered any of the factory controls or will I be sending any signals through the factory modules.

My only problem at the moment is finding a set of buttons to test. I need to know resistance through the switch buttons to see if I can match them to the resistance needed for the pioneer.

I am planning to use idatalink to keep the other factory settings through the radio.

Any thoughts on this?

OK not sure if anyone is still following this post but here is an update on my plan. I have made an offer on a damaged wheel with controls wires etc... If I can get it I have also found the resistance values of the remote input on the pioneer stereo. I plan to use my stock steering wheel with only the top buttons. I will rewire the buttons with the correct resistance to get the functions I want. vol up vol down seek etc. I will use 3 unused connectors in the clockspring to send the signal through the column and directly to the radio. If I like the setup enough I may buy another wheel in the future and wire in the buttons on the back for other functions. I will update once the parts are in and have been tested.

I got the buttons and basically it is a small computer in the printed circuit board. I am just going to use the housing and make my own board that will activate the 7 buttons. I will just build them with the resistance i need for the functions I want. I ordered a cheap pioneer on ebay with remote input to bench test everything.

I need some more info on the wiring through the clockspring. I need 3 available wires.

Did you get it to work?
