Driveshaft has to go to do an encoder motor ,

 

I think ya have to hold 2 buttons to get the case into neutral , check owners manual , someone else will chime in on what buttons

I think to get it in neutral u have to push and hold the 2 hi and 4lo buttons at the same time. But as far as the driveshaft no it DOES not fully have to be removed. Take it lose from front axle then push the front if it towards the drivers side. Now u can remove the encoder motor without disconnecting the driveshaft but it's hard as hell. But can't put it in like that. The encoder motor will hit on the yoke of the driveshaft when putting motor on but hold the encoder and rotate the driveshaft with the other and it'll slide right on. It's not that hard after doing mine I did my buddies in about 30 mins.

There is a sensor inside the encoder motor that can be changed instead of the whole thing , not sure if you guys knew tale of that or not , we did it a cuz zillion times at the dealer

I changed the sensor yesterday. Piece of cake,after getting the encoder motor assembly off the transfer case, just pay attention to what you are doing. There are all kinds of "How To's" on the web and this forum. You DO have to remove or move the front drive shaft forward out of the way to get the encoder motor out and back in. If you disconnect the shaft at the front yoke and slide it forward, you HAVE removed the drive shaft. But, let's not quibble over symantics.......

I know you have to hold down the 2H & 4L buttons to shift the transfer case in to nuetral. I have tried it in Park, Nuetral and Drive. Engine running, ignition on /engine off. None of the combinations work, it will not shift in to nuetral under any combination. it does cycle through all other selections with no issues. Anyone know if there is a reprogram that needs to be done when these components are changed or altered?

I have a '99 Silverado with the Autotrac. The "neutral" used to work on the transfer case. I don't remember the exact sequence, but it used to work. I then got the "Service 4WD light" so I replaced the switch back in 2003 or 4. Haven't gotten the Service 4WD light any more, but my transfer case won't go into neutral either. I've heard of others having the same issue with replacement switches. Did yours ever go into neutral? If not, maybe someone already replaced your switch.

I replaced the switch years ago when I first had the issue, thinking that was the problem, it wasn't. I still have the original switch, I'll put it back in and see if it works. I'll post results later. Thanks for the tip! Occam's Razor.......
