Good Morning!

I am new to the site and have this is the first time owning a Silverado. I have owned a 02 v6 3.8L Turbo V6 firedbird (400HP) and a 02 Z06 389 rwhp corvette. I currently own a 99 5.3L 2wd Silverado Single cab/Longbed and have many questions about the suspension. I have tried using the search button before signing up but seems it was better to go ahead and signup since I was visiting this site more and more often.

My goal for the truck is make a good reliable truck and be able to put a 285/75R16 tire on a 16x8 6-5.5 rim or the biggest tire on the Stock rim to give me some options. Truck needs to be off the ground and don't need a truck to drag with...

I was looking into the Z71 shocks Bilstein 4600 series shocks but realize changing shocks will not change the height of the vehicle (if I recall correctly). I am not a fan of blocks but if anyone has any options for me by all means! Also I need to look more into the leveling kit cause the front is lower then back.

Search button READY GO!

Anyone want to help me in the right direction then please do so. I would appreciate it greatly!

Thank you

Update - leveling kit plus max tire on stock rim including Bilstein 4600 series shocks would be ideal but trying to figure out the max tire I can do with this particular setup.

Bilstein 5100's are height adjustable up to 2.5" I believe. This will give you the leveling ability and nicer shocks and you can run larger tires.

Check around for prices though, just a link as a heads up. Or a basic leveling kit off of ebay with new shocks would be a route too.

As for any specific questions, here is the section pertaining to your model year range: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/forum/3-1999-2006-2007-2013-chevrolet-silverado-gmc-sierra-1500/

Any more questions, let us know.

And welcome to the forum

Thank you for all the greetings! I did post up in the transmission/suspension section about the goal but a 5100 shock would not require a leveling kit?

It has it's pros and cons. You can set it up to add 2.5" "lift" in the front which would roughly level it out, no extra kit required. The only drawback I have read is there wouldn't be as much travel at the full setting and slightly stiffer than at lower setting, but if you're not doing any hardcore offroading, then no worries there.

So I didn't get much reply back in the suspension forum but what do you guys think of a 2 leveling kit and the 5100 shocks? That would solve the more travel problem and allows for a bigger tire then a 255 correct? 5100 shocks in back too..

DayStar 1in leveling kit

With 5100 Series shocks

Should at least give me a 265/70/16 tire...

Also says when I do a 2in leveling kit requires

  • Requires aftermarket control arms and shocks for proper installation

That actually true?

From my understanding, a spacer has more of an affect on geometry and would require new UCA's. Would you be ok with just the bilstein's? can't say for sure as it says "with 3" a-arm style lift kit. Hopefully someone with more experience on that model will chime in.

It all goes with my goal which I want to eventually put a 285 tire on the truck without going through extreme lift procedures. I got a quote from a local shop and they have the following down information down...

Chevy 1500 2Wd 1999-06 COMBO KIT w/ 2" Leveling kit & Scorpion shocks 1 x 372.63 = 372.63

Labor to install bilstein shocks with leveling kit 5 x 85.00 = 425

I know this way over priced but just trying to figure out the logic...

Like I said the goal is a 285 tire and just trying to reach there...

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
