GMC Sonoma 4wd Problems

I have a GMC Sonoma sls 4x4 4.3 and recently the 4wd has been acting up. It never fully comes out of 4wd when used now, and when driving down the highway tries to engage on its own. also at idle, it makes a knocking noise. Not from the engine but from somewhere on the passenger side toward the door. Could this be the 4wd trying to engage? Could it be an actuator gone bad and not fully releasing? Please help.
