Shocks/struts...

Guys, I made the mistake about 5 years ago putting a set of Dick Cepek Series 77 shocks on my 85' 4x4 S10 Blazer. They are way too stiff and I'm ready for a smoother ride.

Can anyone recommend some good quality shocks/struts that will give me a good ride for a vehicle of this type? I do some very light off-roading from time to time.

Also, how hard is installation? Any special tools required? I've never changed a shock/strut.

I just instaled a set of Rancho RSX on my 01 4x4 a few weeks ago, and love them. Much better than stock, but not rought at all. As for the install, not much too it, some good penetrating oil, some basic hand tools and a torque wrench.

Bilstein shocks are pretty good for the combination of driving you described...they're about $50 each, but I have always thought they were great shocks.

I paid $200 for a set of 4 RSX from an on-line store (sam's off road) and shipping was free.

Are the RSX's the ones that have ride controll? I wonder if that is the only difference between the RSX's and the 5000. Sears is running a special right now if you buy the shocks they will install for free.. My buddy and I worked on them and got a lower price on the shocks and did the install ourselves or a 93 Landshark........ Pretty easy. Might give Sears a call.

Yes the RSXs are the ones with ride control. I have hear that the 5000s aren't near as nice.

I put Monroe sensetrac shocks on my 92. they seem to make for a pretty good ride. I had Monroe gas magnums on before and when I took them off they still had decent rebound but the ride was awful. It seems to me the new shock ride lasts about 100 miles then it feels like the vehicle's riding on the springs. I guess it doesn't help it has a 2 ft. wheel base so when you hit a bump or hole the vehicle doesn't have a chance to distribute the jolt. I paid about $35 a piece for the shocks at NAPA

I threw a set of Monroe Reflex on my 1996 GMC Jimmy 2 Dr 4X4 and I thought the ride was excellent and I too did some light off roading. I don't remember what they cost. But I don't think they were that expensive. The bilsteins are excellent shocks also but I think they are way more than the Monroe.

Bilistein aren't what your looking for if you want a smooth ride. Go for a good monroe, procomp, or if you've got cash to spare edlebrocks. My buddies car handles wonderful with edle's
