3rd Gear Slipping Issue?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

For quite a while now, probably over a year, I've noticed that when downshifting from overdrive into 3rd the rpm's will jump a little and then go back to normal almost like the tranmission is slipping or something. Just the other day this started happening when shifting from 2nd into 3rd. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what might be happening. I have the battery unplugged right now just to see if anything weird is going on there, but I'm doubting that will help. Only thing that has changed is my local GM dealer put new transmission cooler lines in and that was a few months ago already. The downshifting "slip" was present before they did that. One other question, I bought this truck certified used quite a few years ago, like 4 or 5 I think. Does this have any sort of drivetrain warranty left that could help if something is wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

I'm afraid it'll get worse then no 3rd or 4th gear because of the infamous 3-4 clutch failure ,

You used to able to buy the 3-4 clutch pack separate but they have stopped selling them that way now ,

Rebuild or install a rebuilt unit when it finally shits the bed , ensure the cooler gets flushed , shift adapts reset with a scanner

Thanks for the reply even though it wasn't what I wanted to hear. Sucks because it is my daily driver. I think I have pulled a trailer with it twice ever and it only had a dirt bike and quad on it. I guess I'll take it in and see what they give me for a diagnosis. Will respond back here once I know more just in case it helps anyone else going forward. By the way, unhooking the battery and plugging back in overnight did nothing to help it. So definitely not something weird with the computer.

Thanks again.

They are gonna want to sell a rebuild , it only comes with a 1 yr warranty , a GM rebuilt tranny has a 3 yr warranty ,

The dealer will reset the shift adapts and flush the cooler with a fancy machine , it's a good deal , consider that , turn around time is half of a rebuild ,

I used to rebuild a tranny in 9 hrs out the door , replacing is 4 or so hrs , ( that doesn't mean you pay that , you pay the flat rate) which is higher , tech is always faster than the flat rate with experience like a tranny guy would have ,

I'm looking into the certified used details now. I'm wondering if any of this might be covered under the powertrain warranty...need to find when I bought it. I've only got just under 82,000 miles on it.

Has anyone used the Certified Used powertrain warranty? I purchased the truck 4/24/2010 so it looks like I have until 4/24 of this year. Any idea if the transmission would be covered under that??

Tranny is in the power train soooo I think yes , see your advisor , you'll get it rebuilt

Rob, when they replace the transmission does the torque converter get changed? Reason I ask is I'm trying to figure out what it still feels like it is slipping even after a new/reman transmission. Thanks!

GM trannies come with a new TC , pretty sure aftermarket does as well ,

Slipping in one gear has nothing to do with TC

You have the same problem after a rebuilt tranny install ??

Yeah, same problem. Just trying to think if what else it could be. I'll be calling the dealership on Monday to let them know.

Hey Jeff, I had similar issues with my trans. I bought the 03 Sierra 5.3 Z71 new, it shifted poorly from day 1, sometimes it would slam into gear while upshifting, dealer " could not find customer complaint " each time it went in for service/warranty. Around 100,000 miles it wouldn't shift into OD, or even stay stuck in 3rd sometimes. Dealer said a new "3/2 shift solenoid", this didn't totally solve the issues so they installed a new ignition switch. WOW!! The trans worked like a dream, smooth positive shifts while towing or empty. This lasted for 80,000 miles then I noticed a slight "RPM flare"after it had engaged 3rd gear. R&R Racing Transmission in Hinsdale NY overhauled it, replacing or modifying a lot of parts including the 3/4 clutches/basket, new convertor, oil cooler etc. Works well now. 1200 bux all in. Don't know if this will help you, good luck.

FYI: This truck works hard, carrying a 2000 lb slide-in camper while towing a 5000 lb car/trailer combo

Thanks for the reply. Mine has never slammed into gear other than the notorious harsh 1-2 shift that everyone has. We'll see what the dealership says tomorrow.

Truck is going back to dealership on Wednesday. They still think that they diagnosed it properly. The truck is still doing it, though it is considerably less noticeable. They said they still have my old transmission there...do I ask them to swap it back in and see if it comes back? I'm not really sure what to do at this point.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
