1992 GMC k3500 no rear drive

I have a 1992 GMC k3500,6.5 diesel, auto transmission. Well today while I was driving it I slowed down for a corner after the corner I gave it gas and it wouldn't move in any gear, no grinding ect. Also when I went to put it in park it acted like the transmission still spinning and I got a slight grind till it went into park. So I put it in 4wd and shifted it into gear and it drove and shifted fine no problem. So I'm wondering what would cause me to loose my rear drive?

Could be a problem with the drive shaft. Either broke, or popped out of place. Being able to drive it with the front wheels is interesting, but leads me to believe it's not a transmission problem. Grab a buddy to help and watch what happens underneath when you try to move in 2-wheel drive. If it is a drive shaft problem, it should stand out to you. If you don't see anything obvious, or check and see that the shaft is connected properly, it could be a problem in the pumpkin. Start there and let us know how it goes.

Looked under it today didn't see anything wrong with the driveshaft and 2wd is working again today so I'm not sure what's wrong.

Wow, that's weird. Lol. Never seen an intermittent power transfer problem like that.

Well, keep an eye on it. If it does it again, maybe you'll find something.

Maybe take a quick look at the transmission fluid. If it's burned at all, a flush might solve the problem. But I dunno, this isn't giving me the feeling of a transmission problem.

But if it is burned and you want to flush it, it's not too hard to do yourself. If you want some steps on how it's done, let me know.

I'll check the tranny fluid, doesn't seem like a tranny problem to me either. But I'll drive it for a few days and see if the problem pops up again and if it does I'll be sure to let you know.
