Nice buck. The use of a 30-40 isn't such a big deal as he made it out to be. Millions of them were made by different makers under license. I suppose they're somewhat unknown to the younger generations. There were many millions of bolt action rifles made in the WW 1 era. Krags are one of the less desirable because they are not as aesthetically designed as the Mauser and Springfield. Ballistics on the 30-40 put it around the. 308 Especially if handloaded.

 

In my safe, there is a 1903 Springfield model, manufactured before 1910. it was bought by my father in the early 60's at a Gambles drugstore in Montana for about $37. He had it sporterized from the military configuration by a gunsmith in Japan, while.we were stationed there in the mid 60's. I restocked it in the 70's and put a Leopold scope on it. With my handloads, it would hold just over an inch, 5 shot groups at 100 yds. Better than most OTC modern rifles. I hunted it in the late 70's. I keep it for the memories as I haven't fired it in a few decades. That ol Krags likely has a very similar story.

 

Millions of these WW 1 bolt action rifles were sold to the sportsmen here. The gun magazines of the 50's and 60s were full of sporterized guns. All the gun accessories were aimed at sporterizing these guns. Even today, a browsing of scope mount catalogs will show some of these old guns.

Thanks for the info. I have researched and discovered the 30-40 Krag isn't that rare of a rifle however getting a shot on a nice buck like that and filming it made it that much more cool. One of the guys that is part of Leatherwood Outdoors was in the military with me and I just love their hunting videos.
