Want To Go Driverless? GM Buys Automation Company

General Motors is taking steps to ensure it is not left out of the coming driverless car and truck world. This week, GM has paid a cool $billion for Cruise Automation. Cruise Automation is a software and rapid development company. The new acquisition will work as an independent unit within GM. “Fully autonomous vehicles can bring our customers enormous benefits in terms of greater convenience, lower cost and improved safety for their daily mobility needs,” said GM President Dan Ammann.

 

According to Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, “Cruise provides our company with a unique technology advantage that is unmatched in our industry. We intend to invest significantly to further grow the talent base and capabilities already established by the Cruise team.”

 

As we have recently reported GM bought Lyft and Maven. GM sees car-sharing services, car for hire, and automated vehicles merging in the future.

I guess this is a good move on their part to stay in the game. I would still rather do the driving myself.
