Guess I have a speech to give

Couple of weeks ago while my buddy and I were working out he mentioned to me that he was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. This didn't come as any suprise to me, as I told him it was going to happen well over a year ago. But anyways, he asked me to be the best man at their wedding. I said I would be happy to, but this means that I have to give a speech at the reception. And there lies the problem.

I have absolutely no problem standing in front of a group of people giving a speech, but I HATE writing speeches with a passion. This one is even worse since it is for a pretty important occassion, in front of a lot of people. Needless to say I don't want to screw this up by having a crappy speech. I also don't know what all I am supposed to talk about, who I need to talk about, how long this needs to take, etc. Am I supposed to get the bride and grooms approval of the speech before hand, or are they not suppose to hear it before the reception?

As you can tell, I really don't know much about this at all. Haven't been to a wedding in about 6yrs so I have no experience I can remember to base this off of. So does anybody hear have any sort of tips for me? Do you think I could find some sort of template for these speeches to give me a general idea of what to include? Thanks for any help you can give me. LOL

You may not want to do it this way, but ive given 2 speeches and never written anything down.

It is so easy to talk about a good friend, and i just said what was on my mind. I even got a few laughs from everyone.

Just ramble on about how happy you are for them and blah blah blah, the guests will be so caught up in the occasion that they really won't give a s**t about what you say and they will all clap for you anyway.

Sounds like what I do.

I hardly ever study for tests or anything, but I almost always pass with flying colors.

Just have a few drink before hand, don't talk about your trips to Vegas or strip clubs, and make sure you wink at the hot brides maids when your done.

As the best man for my good friend, I had to give three speeches at his wedding. The trick isn't to make them long, only memorable. Try:

- General searchs online for wedding speeches (The Best Man)

- Grab 10-15 different phrases, ideas or speech "clips", print and cut them out and then sit at a table with a beer and organize them. Its much easier to move phrases around than to re-edit (even on a computer)

- Find out your buddy's and his fiancee's family background. My bro is Irish, so one of my toasts was Irish (went over BIG)

So no time limit, no set topics that you have to cover (just end with "and I wish them the best, yada, yada, yada) and you sure ask heck don't have to get their approval on the speech before hand (I highly recommend not doing that, keep it a secret and make them sweat it out).

I had to give one for my friends wedding not too long ago. My answer to your question is to wing it...make sure you got a few drinks in ya before you do it to loosen up... worked for me. LOL

Just take a few excerpts from some of your posts over the past about women being "evil", and you'll be fine.

Either that, or watchthe first 30 mins. of "Old School" and take notes.

Well General, that might be a good idea except for a few minor problems. You see, I will be going to this wedding as a single guy. And in between doing all the other stuff that is involved, I am going to find some time to see what my chances are with the maid of honor and some of the brides good looking relatives. (Don't worry, I was even encouraged by the bride and groom to do so. LOL) Now seeing as how I look like a bada$$ in the tuxes that were picked out, I think my chances are not to bad. No, I take that back. My chances are d**n good based upon past events. I'm not going to ruin that by making any sort of reference to how evil women can be.

Oh yeah, no alcohol at the reception either. Why I don't know. So that suggestion is out, unfortunately.

They're probably afraid of something you might do while drunk.

I just all settled down again from the move from college home... I am a slow mover, settler in... so anyway, I believe I am back for a while...

I just got through with a good friend of mines wedding, I was a groomsman, and there were some really good looking brides maids there, and I had the hottest one attatched to my arm ;) But she was taken... anyway, the best man just told the groom that he had been there for him since fifth grade, and will always be there for him... I thought it was a really good short speech, but it ended with tears from the best man so it was heart felt...

Anyway, now I got to go play catch up :thumbs:
