Smokey Start up

Recommended Posts

Hi, My truck has done this a couple of times over 50K and I remember asking about it on this forum before, but i forgot what the problem was. It only smokes for the start up, just a cloud of ~blue smoke right when motor fires up. By the time key goes from Start to Run, its all over. My freinds 01 5.3L Z71 did this about a week ago too. Both trucks have flows dumped (his is true dualled) and FIPK's and run synthetic oil.

Thanks,

Chris.

If you pvc is fine, cold start blue smoke is usually valve guides. Oil trickles down into the cmbustion chamber while the vehicle sits. First start burns oil and then it's over till the truck sits again.

Unless your oil consumption is up, I wouldn't worry about it.

LOL, my two problems with my truck have been addressed in the first few threads.

My truck did the same thing a couple weeks ago after sitting for a couple days. Started her up, noticed that it was a bit rough for about 2 seconds after ignition...then cleared up right away...looked out my review mirror and saw light smoke. This is the only time its done it....

I guess I'll be adding a PCV valve to my list of things that need done...

My 02 does the same thing....It has the new PCV installed......I only drive it once a week or so, and it smokes everytime I first start it.....I took it to the dealer for some other things and told them about it (I figured it had to be valve seals leaking past when sitting), and they told me that they couldnt duplicate it and to "start the vehicle more often".....In other words "we arent going to do sh&t about it"........

Isn't that alway the way. :fume: They never seem to be able to duplicate the problem.

The smokey start ups are generally valve guides and seals. My '89 was doing that all the time until I pulled the heads and had them re-done. It has never done it since.

I was curious of something, how can the PCV valve have anything to do with oil leaking into the cylinder when the engine is not running or for that matter how can it prevent it at startup. ???

:fume:

I guess built up pressure right after you shut down can force oil through the valves seals.

Smoke at startup has been a common problem with Chevy for many years. I have seen new vehicles, especially older style Camaros, smoke at startup right from the lot. More than likely the PCV valve replacement is not going to solve the smoke at startup. I lean more toward valve seals.

I figured there was nothing to worry about since it won't smoke any when smoke'n someone on the street!!! :fume: I think I'll replace the pcv anyway. Could it be benificial for oil to get in the valve seals? Lube'em up from the inside?
