I'm trying to find out if my rear wheel bearings are bad, if I shake the rear back and forth I hear a popping noise from both sides. If so. Do I gotta open up the rear pumkin and pull the axles to replace wheel bearings?

Yeah, you would need to pull the cover, pull the clip and remove the axles to replace the bearings.

There is a pretty good amount of side play in the axles to start with however and the wheel bearings do not factor into that.

The axle side play is all in the clip/carrier/axle retaining. If you have an excessive amount of play, look hard at the clips and axles for wear.
