285/75r16 on stock GM rims - Old Topic I Know

Im sure this topic has been beat to hell and opinions vary but running a 285 on the stock GM 2500HD rims a good idea or what? Also can you guys post pics of your trucks with the 285's

I bought my truck with 285s on it and they were pretty bald but they seemed to have held up well. I have no idea if he pulled trailers or hauled anything though. Personally I wouldn't bother with them. I put 265s on. If you look up the actual dimensions 285/75r/16 is 32.8x12. The 265s are 31.9x11 or close to that. I initially thought they looked like little tiny hot wheels tires but after running them for awhile I actually like how they look. They don't look so stuffed in there.

 

I'm sure you'll be hard pressed to find a tire shop that will say it's ok to put them on and everything will be fine. Yes there are some risks by exceeding manufacture recommendations. Is it a huge problem? Maybe, maybe not. Depends how you run them. I'd say either get the 265s and just deal with the inch difference, or buy wider rims. If you're lifted up or anything then maybe the nicer aftermarket rims and bigger tires is the look you're going for. If you're using it as a work truck then I'd say get some nice A/T tires with more aggressive tread and that should make it look a little nicer.

The 285's will rub against the air dam on front. You can trim it easy enough and few people will notice if you take your time. The narrow rim width will cause excessive wear down the middle. I ran 265's on mine but a buddy had 285's that's how I know. Sorry, I can't post any pictures, he traded it in.

My 2000 1500 4X4 ext. cab bought used came with 285s and when I had to replace them I went with Cooper's Discovery ATs and kept the 285 75r 16. I never had any problem with scrubbing the air dam at all. That said they will lower your gas mileage and tht also said, on my 04 2500HD 4X4 ext. cab I have 17" wheels and the 285s do scrub the dam on extrem turns only, but only bad enough to remind me not to turn so hard.

My 02 2500HD has 17" dodge wheels with 285s and the only thing I had to do was remove the front mud flaps. Now I don't currently have an air dam on the truck because the old owner took it off to put a plow on but looking at it I would have plenty of room if it were there.

I run them on my '02 with stock wheels. (BFG All Terrains)

As Beaux Duke stated, they wear in the middle. When I'm running emtey, I adjust tire pressure lower to spread weight across tread better.
