'17 All Terrain w/ Steel Control Arms

With a full suspension lift the arms are kept near their factory angles anyway, so it's not a problem. Any kit that's 2.5-4 that doesn't fully drop the control arms and have new spindles will cause the issue of not clearing the strut. Bds kits for instance work with the stamped steel arms. But any smaller kit won't without replacing the arms

Certainly no expert especially on varying heights but I am not certain all kits will maintain all the appropriate factory angles specifially ie) some have more wear and tear. At least this is what I have been led to believe through sources like this.

The denomonator is (or at least was) if your vehicle build lists premium suspension. There are 3 options, Stock, Offroad tuning (Z71) or premium suspension. ex) High Country and Denali come with premium suspension stock so offroad tuning is not even an available option and they have aluminum. It is also available as an option on other trim lines.

The problem with stamped steel arms is the upper control arm doesn't clear the strut if it's lifted more than 2 inches. It's really easy to tell if they are stamped or cast. These are cast, I'm glad my 16 has them. I know rough country said they are coming out with kits for stamped arms, it most likely will include replacement UCAs. /quote]

 

Yep I get that but if I'm buying the kit with replacement upper arms that issue would be solved, right? I guess I'll have to call them tomorrow or Tuesday.

 

Exactly. That's what I believe rough country is working on. I know a lot of shops swap the stamped arms with cast arms to avoid that, not exactly a cost effective fix though. The stamped arms are not necessarily an inferior arm, it's just a cost cut. Gm has put them on some of their vehicles before, it's just too bad that upper arm has significantly less clearance

I have crappy signal so I can't watch the video unfortunately at the moment. Bds kits and others that include new knuckles and full control arm drops do maintain factory angles, they require a good bit of cutting though. That's why many just go with these level kits and cheaper 3.5 and 4 inch kits. The problem with those is the cv angles and lower/upper ball joints suffer because new cross members and knuckles aren't provided

Odd from what I know but anything is possible in the year 2106 :)

 

But no really I did not think a HC came from factory with em, maybe different in 2016? Any idea what your build sheet says for suspension? Premium(High Performance)?

 

Edit: Looks like they call it 'High Performance'?

They offer a kit with arms now that's why I'm confused. The mounting location for the arms shouldn't be any different and you reuse the struts so mounting to the lower doesn't change so what could make the kit not work? Amazing that GM uses 3 different control arms on the same truck. I originally thought all Z71 suspensions used the aluminum arms but obviously that isn't correct.

The 3.5 kit has arms available, I don't see why it wouldn't work if the arms are replaced. Yeah there is no rhyme or reason why gm puts what arms on what truck it's really bizarre

Ok just got off the phone with RC, and I'm still confused. They say the issue is that the CV boot will rub the control arm after the lift. I have to assume he meant the lower arm but sure how that's possible. I understand that the geometry will change a bit but can't see how it will rub. Maybe it's the diff drop spacers that will cause this. Obviously they've seen this so I have to trust them unless someone has done this kit before with stamped arms. He did say they are working on a kit but no idea when they will have it.

 

May make a new post asking about the combo and see if anyone has done it on a '16 yet.

That's weird.. But yeah I would definitely wait till they have a stamped steel kit. Crazy how gm used 3 control arms on this damn truck within a couple years.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
