A funny story

I remember A funny "incident" from one of the first times my mom let me drive on the road. It was back like 8 months ago. I was out on US Route 360 (3 lane highway) this particular stretch had a Stop light every 5 miles or so.

Anyways it was back when I was just getting used to the RPMs and when I'm supposed to shift (My mom still says to this day I shift too late). I was at one of the lights in the far left lane and I needed to get to the far right. There was a tow truck in the middle lane. I thought i could outrun him and cut over in front of him from a safe distance. So the light turns green and we both charged for it. Well, his engine was louder than mine so I couldn't hear it but I saw it was reving at 3500 so I shift to 2nd, it goes clearly thru 4th gear but just one prob. He's still beside me, so I figured I could slam it into 5th and blast by (one of those testosterone things I guess). Well, I Slammed the Shifter............BACK DOWN TO 3RD!!!  The engine was SCREAMING at 4500 (He was still right beside me, so it was still hard to hear my engine over his) (I've never seen the tach go up so high). So I ended up dropping back behind him. I was dissapointed, So in frustration, when I pulled into my driveway (2 miles away from the "incident" ) I Popped the clutch and just let the front wheels (it's a honda) rip into the gravel.

I know it's mean, but I was still learning, so I pretended it was accidental, til mom caught on.

If your mom thinks you're shifting too late, and 3500-4500 RPM seems  like high RPMS, she must be a VERY conservative driver.  When I drive 4-cylinder standard shift cars I like to run em to at least 3500 when cruising around, and the redline is the limit when pouring on the power.  Play it cool with mom, but when you get your own car (truck?) you can play with the Rs a little more and see what the engine really likes.  Of course, this is how I blew the engine in my first car ('79 Honda Prelude)...a few too many Rs a few too many times...

Heck! Your tame general! You should see when we drive our 00 corvette and 97 Z28! Its right up to 5500! And those are V8's.

Of couse we don't drive it like that all the time, but its fun none the less.

Yeah, She NEVER runs it past 3000 RPMs. I think the red line on this car is 5000.

You'd be surprised, There's  holes in the driveway from when I let er rip. I used to do it everytime I pulled in the Driveway, until mom caught on to the fact that I was doing it on purpose.

Hey Zane,

What do your parents drive when you and Josh take the Vette and the Z28 out.

Hey Zane,

What do your parents drive when you and Josh take the Vette and the Z28 out.

Josh drives the Camaro as his vehicle to school, and my father drives the Vette to work in the spring, summer and part of the fall. When he cannot drive the vette, he takes the Camaro, and Josh takes the bus to school. I drive my truck and my mother has a Conversion Van. When ever i drive it, its only for trips to the store or the such.

What are you driving now that the ZR2 is in the shop? BTW, have you gotten it back yet?

I got it back the same day it was in.

We had a 86 honda Accord 3 door that we bought new and I used to run it to about 4k before I shifted.  I remember riding with a friend in high school and he'd shift at about 3k also, and it felt like he was just into the powerband:)

As young enthusiastic drivers it is your duty to press these little engines and see what they are worth... you may blow one or two, but it;'s the price you pay!  or your parents pay, as the case may be

Trust me, if I blow the dagon thing I'M PAYING FOR IT. LOL

yeah, I had to pay for mine too...do you have any idea how long it takes to get the money for a new clutch or rebuilt engine when you work at Jack in the Box?? LOL

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
