What exactly is a throttle body spacer and what does it do. Wehy does it make more power? How much are they? Or do you make them yourself? I have the Vortech 5.7L. Thanks in advance.

It raises the throttle body approx 1" and is supposed to swirl the air coming into the manifold thru the bore of the spacer and make more hp or better gas mileage. I have seen them from $60 to $100 depending on manuf.

I have read several threads of other members saying there useless  and some say it actuall makes a difference :D .

Most of them will not work w/ an aftermarket intake w/o cutting the fan shroud and/or modifications.

I do not have one and do not plan on getting one- saving my money for the progammer. Just my $.02. Hopes this helps.

The main purpose of a spacer is to isolate the throttle body or carb from heat transfered by the intake manifold. You might see some gain on a T.B.I. engine. If it's worth the money or not is debatable.

I have looked at a few. Some say that it is a waste because the vortec action that it claims to make is already made in a vortec engine.

As a note:

If you have a K&N intake and a 3" body lift, I kind of doubt that you will have enough room to fit one of those in there. I was looking at mine when I installed the K&N and was thinking about adding one but during install I realized there is just no room. The intake tube does touch the fan shroud and the the blades seem to be like an inch (two if lucky) from the tube. Add another inch in there and even cutting the shroud I think it will hit the fan.

Just my 0.02.

It seems to me that in a multi-port fuel injected motor that swirling the air at the throttle body wouldn't do any good? Dont know for sure, Just seems logical.

And then I added one to My 1999 OBS Z-71 and it worked out great. Like removing the "Quadra Bogg" and installing a Holley.

It really depends on you application. It's like a hit or miss thing. Some people install therm and they work good with thier setup, and on some vehicles no gain is noticed or gained. I was lucky in my case it worked out well...JohnB
