6.2l engine for $600?

Hi guys. I work at an automotive repair shop and we had a 2010 escalade come in with the owner complaining of an engine noise. Right away we noticed a tick.. We checked the oil and found nothing on the dipstick. Long story short, the owner opted to drop a new crate 6.2l in the truck.

 

I have an 09 Sierra Denali with the 6.2 and of course have the cold start piston slap that drives me crazy. Before this truck I had an 08 Silverado 5.3 with afm and delt with the afm issues/collapsed lifters. The escalade that came into my shop sounded almost identical as my 08 Silverado when a lifter collapsed.

 

Here's my question - do you think it's worth it to buy the 6.2 from the escalade? The core charge is $600 and that's what I can buy it for. I know the 10 has afm where my 09 doesn't. I'm thinking about buying it and doing Pistons, cam, and afm delete. I can do all the work myself and get parts at cost. When I was pricing out used engines for the customer, I couldn't get my hands on even a used salvage yard engine for less than $3000. The piston slap in my truck makes me cringe and I'm thinking about buying this engine, rebuilding and having it ready for when my piston slap gets to the point I can't stand it anymore. Thoughts/concerns/questions much appreciated.

The L9H 6.2 does not have AFM. Mine is a 2010 without AFM

I would just leave the engine in your truck in there if it is because you are worried about the slap. If you really want to do a build, then it sounds like a great block to start with, unless it had severe starvation and has cylinder wall damage or spun a bearing and needs line bored, etc, etc, you probably know the drill anyway. I would not worry a bit about the piston slap, I have done tons of work with GM trucks and have NEVER seen any failure related to slap. My personal truck has been clanging on cold startup like a 50,000 hour CAT engine for 250,000 miles and never missed a beat. It is a result of the material that GM casts its pistons out of; it has different thermal expansion properties than the bore it lives in, thus the piston contracts at a slightly higher rate than the bore and causes the clanking sound. not harmful, just a bit annoying.
