DIY XM radio options??

With my XM free trial expiring, I'm looking into other options to basically be able to duplicate the functionality of XM.

 

I'm familiar with using Pandora or Tune In radio or other music apps. But I also have a ton of music saved on my computer and was wondering about using a portable hard drive and just sticking it in the center console. My main questions are around how the files are set up? Is there anyway I could group the music by genre and then select a genre to play songs randomly?

 

Is anyone else running a portable hard drive for their music?
