502 V8 in a Reg. cab GMC 3500

So today I'm at the fuel pump and an old farmer pulls in the stall behind me. Being a fairly nice guy, I say hello. He says howdy and starts to fill his tank. I mention the fact that he has a nice truck, and he thanks me for the compliment. Brand-new 2003 GMC Sierra 3500 reg. cab, longbox, pewter color, Ally.

I ask him if it's got some guts to it (which I know it does), and here's where it gets confusing:

He says "Yeah, that 502 will light up the duals all right." :fume:

HUH?? WHAT ?? :mad::fume:

I was sure that the standard big block V8 from GM was the 496. not, the 502. But why did he say that? Maybe he was mistaken....or maybe I was.

Anyone know if the 502 is an opt. in 3500s? I seriously doubt it, though.

That's what I thought. Now I wish I would have asked him to pop the hood and have me a looksee.

Ryan, that link is sweet ! I'll take one of each of the crate motors :fume:

"Yeah, that Mark 6 will light up the duals." :fume:

Isnt a 8.1 really a 502. Kinda like a 5.7 LS1 is really 346 ci? Hes an old timer. Maybe he was just going by what he knows the 8.1 signifies.

lessee here...

61 cubic centimeters equals 1 liter. So.....8.10 L x 61= 494.1 c3

496 c3 / 61= 8.13 L

Which is it? 494 or 496 ?

Some people wouldn't know what engine they had if it fell on them :fume:

Alex

If one that big fell on me....I wouldn't even know my name, much less what size it was. :fume:

The 8.1L/Ally combo is a 496 Cubic Inch Big Block Chevy.

With the Torque Management program from GM I doubt it would just "fry" the tires... :fume:

Bore and Stroke for a Vortec 8.1 is 4.25"x4.37" (107.95 x 111.00 mm)

So capacity in cubic inches is (4.25/2)² x pi x 4.37 x 8 = 495.95

In metric: 8127cc or 8.127 litres.

The 502 is a competely different animal with a larger bore and shorter stroke (4.466" x 4.00").

Hope that helps.

D**N, SON !!!! :mad:

You're gettin all sorts of technical on us now. :mad:

I could care less if it's really a 494 instead of a 496. As long as it's not a ECOTEC I-4. Ooooo, scary ! :fume::mad:

Yep, it helps. Thanks a lot ! :fume:

Old farmers are old and they are farmers

my friend and I (we're 20) are always joking about this. We call it cock strong, you know the kind of guy that couldnt bench press 200lbs but could pull up a pine tree and beat your @$$ with it :fume:
