2012 GMC Sierra SLE Stuck in 4 wheel Low

Hello,

 

My dad has a 2012 Sierra and he put it in 4 wheel low and it won't shift back into 2WD. He says that the lights are not lit up on the dial and there are no service lights on (traction control off and Stabilitrac Off are lit up but those are turned off automatically when it's put in 4 wheel low). The fact that he isn't getting a message telling him to service 4WD is what puzzles me

 

Any thoughts on what might cause it would be appreciated.

I have an 05 and this happened once. I left it in 4lo disconnected battery, module and encoder motor for 30 min. Hooked it back up, started and cycled 4hi and then 2wd. It cycled through and haven't had another issue. Can't say this will work just throwing out an idea.
