Clicking in dash 99 Tahoe

Ok, my 99 Tahoe just started somehting very annoying. While I am driving it something in the dash makes a clicking noise. It just started doing it this week and it sounds very much like a relay clicking on and off. This is really puzzling me since everything in the truck is working properly. The weird thing is it only does it while driving down the road at 20 mph+ . When the truck is sitting still idling in park or in gear it doesn't make the noise. At first I thought it sounded like the shifter lock-out solenoid, but I know it isn't since I can reach under the dash and feel it and it is not what is clicking. I have isolated it to something near the top of the steering column or near the IP cluster. If I put my hand on the cluster I can feel the thump with each click. You set a clock by the clicks too, they come 3 seconds apart the entire time the truck is at 20 moh or over. I turn up the radio but the click is still audible. If I don't figure out what it is soon I will have a wreck trying to figure it out. I guess I can take the panels off of the dash and drive around like that and try to figure it out. Thought maybe one of you guys might have an answer.

Thanks,

Jason

Check your trip odometer. The one in my '90 GMC would hang up once in a while and click and not advance. I would just reset it and it would be fine again.

Not sure if this is you problem but worth a try.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the odometer is probably digital(?)

I would agree with the notion it was your speedo cable. Make sure and use the specific stuff they make for speedometer cables, and not just some WD-40. :puke:

A friend of mine didn't realize the stuff they made for that was a powder and not a liquid... Anyway, not a good outcome.

Well guys, I found it this morning before I saw any posts here. It was the trip counter hung up. I pushed the reset and now all is right. I thought about that a tfirst but I looked at the odometer and it was functioning properly, I never looked over at the trip :puke: . Strange, I have driven tons of these trucks and never seen that happen before. sdtahoe called it though :puke:

Thanks guys,

Jason

BTW these trucks haven't had cable driven speedos since 85 or 86
