A/C compressor working, but working intermittently when jumped from hi

Ok well to begin with my A/C compressor has not been turning on so I'm only having warm air blow out the vents.(Not to mention I live in FL). After doing some research I checked all fuses, the relay and and the A/C switch on the dash. So my next step was to jump the high pressure switch under the hood and what do you know the a/c compressor kicked on. The problem that I'm running into now is while the compressor is jumped from the high pressure switch the compressor turns on and off intermittently with still warm air blowing out of the vents even for the short time the compressor is running. Is the any way to power directly to the compressor to eliminate an electrical issue or is the any other diagnostics I can preform? Thanks for all the help!!

Or maybe I jumped it from the low pressure switch. It was the switch that was connected to the canister.

Check the pressures with a gauge before you begin forcing the compressor to run. Report back with your readings.

My main concern was that the compressor was shot but if its working when its being jumped that means its still in working condition right? It was just filled with R34 and couple months ago. What should my pressures be?

Why was it recently filled? Sealed system that has no leaks should never need any freon added.

Pressure with the compressor NOT running should be at least 85 PSI. It takes about 30 PSI on the low side to keep the compressor engaged. By jumping the low side pressure switch, the compressor will run, but it will not cool if there is no freon.

Let me add that the compressor could be "shot", but the only way to tell is to look at the pressure readings.

Well i refilled it until the gauge on the can from autozone went to the red and it wouldn't take anymore. Thats when i discoverer the compressor was not running. I refilled it because it wasn't blowing cold and thought it just need to be charged because the truck was sitting for about 7 months

Slow your roll man. Don't run your pump like that. It needs to come on properly and should not be jumped. That being said, if you want to keep the pump running all the time, just run a 12V power wire directly from the battery to the + wire going into the A/C pump. Ideally you would want to run the wire from a source that only supplies power when the rig is running. The pump itself is controlled by the clutch. The clutch is controlled my an electromagnet. The electromagnet is controlled by that 12V+ lead. >>> Don't run your pump like that !! <<< If you run the pump "dry" its going to fry it, and then you will have to fix that too. I am confident that you will be able to fix the actual problem with the help of this forum. These guys on this forum are pretty knowledgeable about cars. You came to the right place for help. I am not allowed to tell you how I would fix it, or the admin will delete the information. I was never forbidden to share a link from this website though. It will provide you will everything you need to know to fix your A/C. Please read the entire thread before starting the repairs, because there are differences of opinion on the matter. You be the judge.

Pressure at rest for r134 varies by temperature. For our typical warm weather problem window, pressure would be 70-100.

 

Running compressor and no cold result could be a) low freon, b) blown compressor, c) clogged orifice which would create high pressure at the compressor.

 

Only way to diagnose is with a full set of guages.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
