CV Shaft

Hello everyone. My inquiry is about the front CV shaft on my 2007 silverado new body style. I recently had to replace the passenger side cv shaft. i purchased 2 new shafts from rockauto. Here is a link to the one i purchased http://trakmotive.mycarparts.net/products/TrakMotive%20CV%20Axles-GM-8228?product_application_id=12277715645Now of course i did not pay close attention when i swapped out the passenger side but i drove the truck around in the yard in 4x4 and noticed the clicking was gone so problem solved no need to change the driver at this time. A few days later i was showing a friend the new shaft compared to the old one and of course i noticed its 1" shorter then the old shaft. After trolling the internet for hours everything points to the shaft being 22 7/8 long however the old shaft was 23 7/8 long. Note the old did appear it may have been changed before. My question is how do i know i have the proper shaft installed now as it is possible the previous shaft was incorrect. I have not noticed any issues outside of the tire chirping on sharp turns in 4x4 on dry pavement. Is there a way to know exactly how long the correct shaft should be and if i do indeed have the wrong shaft installed what problems might i be looking at?

Are the left and right side the same part number?

Is the old shaft longer due to the CV joint wear?

If you jack the rig all the way up, or compress the suspension all the way, is the CV axle the "stop" on either direction?

As long as the suspension can move up and down all the way without any effect or influence on the CV axle, I would think you should be OK.

thanks for the replies guys. i'm waiting until Monday to call the dealer to attempt to get a clear answer.

As far as a part number on the old shaft i cant find one looked all over even cleaned it up with a steel brush.

I can compress the old shaft to be likely within a 1/2" of the new one but there's still a difference

Again thanks for all the input. i did send a email out to A! auto asking them about this and they replied stating "After advisement from our technical team here, generally tire chirping is not a normal standard sound. The chirping of tires would be a sign of the axle trying to lock, which could be a sign of either having the wrong axles shaft or possible an issue with your 4WD.

As for the exact dimensions for the correct axle for your vehicle, we would advise contacting the dealer with your VIN number. The dealer would be able to confirm the correct sizing for your axles."

sorry about the delay guys...i have attached 2 pics comparing the old and new cv shaft. the old one is clearly 1 inch longer and the new one center shaft is noticeably longer the old one.

 

i did call my local gm shop and they basically wasnt interested in helping unless i was bringing the truck in. Then i decided to call my local napa dealer and he showed 2 different axles one for hd which is actually shorter then the standard and the axles i currently have matches the length of the standard axle. he did not list anything longer. He also stated the the tires chirping / hopping on turns in 4x4 was basically normal. At this point im wondering if i was simply over reacting and everything is fine. Chime in and let me know what you guys think after viewing the pics. Thanks again guys for all your input

If the suspension flex test doesn't show any issue, then i'm not sure how the length could be a problem. Other issues..... Lets see. The longer one might weigh more and result in a drop in fuel mileage. Its more weight for your floor jack to have to pick up. Hmm... Maybe have an effect on the front end crumple zone?

 

I have seen many differences in replacement parts. Each manufacturer builds it a little different, but they have a certain tolerance that they have to stay within for it to fit that vehicle. For instance - some windshield manufacturers might make them thinner or thicker, but they all have to be with same shape and overall size, plus they have to meet the DOT requirements.

 

It looks like the thread pitch is different on those, but i'm sure both bolts will stay in place even though they are not interchangeable.
