Fuel pump whine

Recommended Posts

Seems this is the season for fuel system problems. When I filled up with gas the other day I started the truck up (after filling up) and got back out for something. I noticed a very high pitched whine coming from underneath the left front corner of the bed (under the gas filler). Does this mean my fuel pump is malfunctioning or ready to go out?

They usually do make a bit of noise when functioning properly.

If it starts to go out the noise level will increase and it will basically be screaming at you.

This is normal. My Suburban sounds like it has a major beehive under the rear bumper. Every other GM truck I remember listening for this on has it too.

Same here. My dads 92 Sierra doesn't but my buddies 99 Blazer does it. Also My 99 Tahoe does it. You really can't hear it unless you are standing outside the truck.

My fuel sending unit was bad so I took it to the dealer. As I had imagined, they had to replace the whole fuel pump. It doesn't matter to me now since it is under warranty, but this one better stay working.

I've replaced one at about 95,000 miles it made a god-awful whine and the replacement does also. It's a pain in the rear to remove the tank. I hope I never have to do it again. Besides it's expensive to buy the fuel pump.
