AC Freezing up.

I recently drove my 01 LT to virginia from Florida. During the trip with the AC on and in Recirculate the system freezes up. Everything works fine for about 445 minutes to an hour and then you notice that the air coming out of the vents has demensihed and is not as cold as normal.

Turning the fan to a higher setting does not help. The only way to get cold air back is turn AC off and go to Flow through. In about 10 minutes it thaws out and the air starts to flow again. In an hour or so it freezes again.

I have the standard manual controls.

Has anyone else been haveing problems.

That's not the condensor freezing up, its the evaporator core icing over. The usual cause of this is if the pressure switch on the accumulator is malfunctioning. This will cause the compressor to run continuously, not cycling like it should. Check that switch and do not operate the AC anymore before you find the problem. Pressure build-up is resulting that could damage your AC system.

Here is a basic description of how an AS system works:

AC theory

note: Your truck uses a cycling clutch orifice tube system.

Thanks for the Reply. I was talking to the Service Manager here and he say that this is very common especially amongst the systems that have automatic controls.
