If you really want to know whats going on with your oil filter, cut it open. I sometimes take my used oil filters and clamp the gasket side in a vice. Then I use a very stout knife or metal sheers to cut the metal all the way around on the gasket end. The metal sleeve comes right off. You want to point the non-gasket end in a downward direction during the process.  Its a great way to evaluate how much crud is inside your engine, and also to see if there are any sudden increases in metal shavings. Works good as an early warning system if your lower rod bearings are getting ready to fail. I open the filters, inspect the filter media, and then pour the oil out of the filter, into a coffee filter or white cloth so that I can see any loose particles. Another option on oil filters is to add an oil filter remote. That gives you all kinds of options, such as pre and post filter oil pressure readings, oil coolers, dual parallel or dual or even tipple inline filter configuration. Plus you can relocate the filter(s) to a spot that's easier to service. So many options.
