Installing brake controller

Recommended Posts

Ok getting ready to order a Prodigy and the wiring for an 03 Chevy. I have never done this so is it just a plug in deal? Where does it plug into? If not how do you wire the controller?

It will go on a 2003 Silverado D/A with factory towing package.

Thanks

no probs man. I just installed the one in my papaw's K3500 DMAX 03 pickup. If you have the factory tow package then it should have the wires necessary and the fuse to install in the glove box. Throw the fuse in I believe Stud #2 in the fuse box underneath the hood, after you plug into the main wiring harness and wire the prodigy brake controller then you should be set. Throw it on a trailer and see how that puppy works. I have a Prodigy myself it's an awesome controler you'll like it. Are you going to buy the 4 axle Prodigy or 2? I got a 4 but considering almost all the trailers you will pull are going to be tandems and knowing that traditionally on of the two axles on the tandem trailer will have an idler hub and other electric brakes I might just get a 2 and save some $$$. Just a thought

Just gonna go with the 2 axle controller because both our enclosed and car trailer are tandem. Im going to have to check for the wiring and fuse but I dont think it is there because we bought the truck used with 11k miles.

I had to buy the fuse at my local Auto Parts Store.... I also had to buy the pigtail too, because GM was too cheap to throw it in the glove box on the '01 HD's... :wtf:

Dang man that sucks. I would be on GM for that it probably don't cost them nothing my buddy washed cars at a local GM dealership for awhile and he told me that when the truck comes in with all the new pickups the guy that is driving the semi has all the pigtails and other, incentives I guess in a 5 gallon bucket with him. Then the dealer ship diveys it out I would go to GM and see if they won't just give you one to keep you happy, probly not but worth a shot. Before that make the previous owner just didn't unhook his brake controller then stuff the wires under the dash. I know I woud be pissed if I bought a pigtail and fuse and didn't need them.

My '03 came with the fuse for tralier lights already installed. There was no fuse, however, to charge the trailer batteries which was not an issue for me. I have the Prodigy too and its a direct plug in with the '03 harness from Tekonsha. There's a good metal ledge to mount the unit on right above the pedals. That's where I mounted mine and its easy to see and reach while driving.

Don't feel bad, they threw it all in the glove box of my '02 but I had to take it to the shop anyway because one of the wires was in the wrong port of the pigtail.

I thought I was going crazy but the guy that straightened it out said that it was common from what he had seen.

They are too cheap on the 03's as well.
