Front axle?

I am kinda new to this site...I just picked up a 2001 GMC 2500HD ext cab 4x4.

I got pretty lucky...the truck only had 18800 miles on it when I got it. It has a 6.0 liter with an automatic. The previous owner put duel flowmaster on it and a set of 285/75/16's on it. I have just ordered a set of GM "green" keys for it to fix the slight tire rub that I get when backing up and to fix the horrible rake it has going on. This is my first GM product...so I seem to be learning as I go. My wife just happened to talk me in to it. I have to say that I am pretty impressed with it so far. I just have a few questions:

1) Does anybody know what front axle is under these trucks? (I would really like to get a front posi or limited slip)

2) With all the different programmers out there now...are they really worth the money? (specifically hypertech or predator)

BTW...this is the best site I have seen so far when it comes to real experience and knowledge.

rear axle is full floating and could have the G80 locking option. There are no factory options for the front. (BTW posi and limited slip are the same thing)

Programers come and go. Hyper tech was popular last year. Westers was popular a few months ago but now I see some people complaining about them. Its a truck, a heavy HD with a 6L and oversize tires, wrong choice for someone wanting performace. If you want to feel more power than change back to the original 245 tires.

I realize where you are coming from about performance and the larger tire but, the larger tires seem to help out on our ranch. I plan on adding a better air intake system and some sort of programmer just to help when I am towing.

I looked up the rpo codes...it turns out that I do have the G80 code.

If anybody happens to know what the ring and pinion size is on the front axle of a 2001 GMC 2500HD with a 6 liter. I would greatly appreciate it.

First off... Welcome to the forum!!!

I have the Westers PCM in my 6.0L and it really seemed to bring the truck to life. The stop light to stop light performance is much better, and the shift points are great. I haven't towed with the truck since the new install, so I don't know if it would improve also.

I'll second the Westers chip, it woke my 8.1 Allison up. It also helped the MPG. It sounds funny but it never got above 9 mpg and I now get 11- 11.5, it doesn't sound like much but that 20% increase. I figured it will pay for itself in a 1 yr to 1.5 yrs. I couldn't believe the difference. I do believe that some trucks seem to make better use of the advanced timing curves than others. Mine has never had any detonation problems to begin with. Larger tires do cut into performance greatly especially with the 6. liter. I noticed it a little with the 8.1 and 265's. Good Luck

Your truck has IFS, independent front suspension, so it's not a axle by definition. The gear case is built by AAM, American Axle Manufacturing. I believe the ring gear is 9 1/4" not 100%. But with the 3/4 ton you can get a limited slip or a ARB, air locker for the front of your truck if your so inclined. Welcome to the forum.

Welocme to the site! I have the 6.0L is my truck and the Westers PCM. The Westers made an incredible difference in the performance of my 6.0L and the way the 4L80E automatic transmission shifts as well. There are some lockers out there for the front diff. if you look around. Check out Eaton they provide the factory G80 locking differential for the HD's....:puke:

I appriciate the info...

I have to say that I am really impressed with it so far. I used to lift trucks for a living before I joined the navy. I am pretty good at doing gear swaps but, the 4.10 gears seem to be doing just perfect with the 285's. I am just needing the lockers to get around on the ranch. I am going to check Westners and see what they can do for me.

Thanks again

:)

    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
    • Thanks for posting, I'm sure it will help someone
    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
