Those years were still 700R4, or 4L60, with no "E", if my memory is correct. The "E" didn't come out until the OBD-II mandate in the 1996 model year. Externally, they're identical from the 80's all the way into the 21st Century as far as I know. I think the ones mated to LS engines have an extra hole right at the top (12 o'clock position).

 

Instead of a computer controlling shift timing, it was all done mechanically, usually with a "TV" cable on GM's that connected directly to the carburetor or throttle body. A yank of the cable raised the line pressures, and downshifted a gear or 2. In earlier times, it was done by vacuum. Some had both.

 

The only electrical connection on those would be for torque converter lockup.
