abs brakes acting up...

Recommended Posts

where to start...

i have a '99 silverado 1500 4x4....

awhile back i had the abs module go bad....

long story short, i found a guy on ebay that rebuilts them. i couldn't get the module off the truck without removing the entire pump and all...

i sent the module to this guy and he fixed it. i put the pump and module back on the truck and bled the brakes with a vaccuum pump. i was concerned about not having the tech II scanner to bled the brakes but i talked to a mechanic at the dealer and he didn't think it would be a big problem to bleed them without it.

anyway after getting it back together i tested it out on a nearby gravel road and everything seemed great...

maybe its just me but around that time i noticed when i would be going real slow, and stopping (mostly in my driveway) that for a second the abs would activate

my front rotors were looking pretty rough and rusted and i figured that to be the problem...

i bought new rotors and pads and did the job...the abs problem seems to be worse now....one thing i noticed is the the pedal pulsates alittle now when i hit the brakes...i'm thinkin that my new rotors are warped, and have to call the store and see about new ones...i bought federated, they are supposed to be made by wagner or bendix....so i didn't expect a problem...i also bought the good pads with ceramic in them...

sometimes now when i'm backing down my driveway (its not to steep) the abs activates, and its like i can't stop no matter how hard i press the brakes...it does it to a lesser extent going forward too....

could this be caused by the warped rotors? or do i have a problem with possible air in the abs module, and have to go get them bled with the scanner? or do i have some other delightful problem that i don't know about yet....one mechanic told me that a wheel sensor might be out of whack....but everything costs 70 bucks to check.....any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

check your hub bearings on both front wheels

jack them up one at a time

grab the wheel and see if there is any freeplay

(major fault on these trucks)

if your rotors were warped you could tell coming off the interstate

shimmy would be quite noticable

i did some shadetree on my 00 sierra

if this doesn't fix it let me know and i'll give you the rundown

:rolleyes::nono::D

sigh....sorry it took me so long to respond....haven't had time to do squat....

checked the bearings....nada...even used a pry bar to check the ball-joints....fine too....

i do have quite a shimmy coming off the highway....its got to be my rotors....

brand spanking new from federated.....supposed to be made by wagner or something.....first time i have ever had a problem with new rotors....

gonna see if they will replace them, or i will have to get them turned....
