I have the 3.08 rear axle ratio without the K5L package (HD towing). Manual says my max towing capacity is 5100lbs. Could I pull more than that if I add transmission and oil coolers? Or am I pretty much screwed because I don’t have the 3.42 rear axle? I’ve read other forums and the consensus seems to be that adding cooling alone will not increase tow capacity. Just wondering if anyone here has actually done it and pulled more than the factory rating and what were the results? I wouldn’t be pulling more than probably 6500lbs. I have too many miles on it to invest in changing the rear axle, it would be more economical to just get a new truck.

Gear ratio is huge. It makes a 3000 lb difference between 3.08 and 3.42.

If I was you I'd be looking for a new truck.
