My 2018 GMC 2500 Denali 2500 Duramax L5P Has 2 codes. P129F & P228C. It still runs but you have to feather the throttle to get it up to speed. It also goes into a reduced power mode. I have read that there may be some wiring issues to the lift pump. It seams that the lift pump is making a strange noise during the initial key on 30 second run time. I have also read up on the lift pump but it is some kind of 3 phase variable speed pump that I am not familiar with. Any info will be appreciated. My truck has 20K miles on it. and has not given me any issues up to now. No mods have been done to it.

P228C is a regulator low pressure code but it sounds like the P129F is what is causing that.  

 

P129F Fuel Pump Driver Control Module Fuel Pump Speed Signal Incorrect.  Could be a bad in tank pump/sending unit assembly or bad fuel pump flow control module.  

 

If you've got warranty still, take it in and let the dealer deal with it.

Thanks. No warranty but thats a story for another day. Im gonna need to find some troubleshooting procedures to determine if its module or lift pump but I think I have a source for that. I'll update next week when I get back on it.

  6. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
  7. Verify DTC P129F did not set.
    • If the DTC is set

      Refer to Circuit/System Testing

    • If the DTC is not set
  8. All OK.
Circuit/System Testing

Note: It may be necessary to remove engine components for the visual inspections.

  1. Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems » Off
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector: @ K111 Fuel Pump Driver Control Module & A6C Fuel Pump and Level Sensor Assembly - Primary
  3. Test for less than 2 Ω between the test points:
    • Control circuit terminal 8 @ Control module harness & Terminal 1 @ Component harness
    • Control circuit terminal 9 @ Control module harness & Terminal 2 @ Component harness
    • Control circuit terminal 24 @ Control module harness & Terminal 3 @ Component harness
    • If 2 Ω or greater

      Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.

    • If less than 2 Ω
  4. Test for infinite resistance between the test points:
    • Control circuit terminal 8 @ Control module harness & Control circuit terminal 9 @ Control module harness
    • Control circuit terminal 8 @ Control module harness & Control circuit terminal 24 @ Control module harness
    • Control circuit terminal 9 @ Control module harness & Control circuit terminal 24 @ Control module harness
    • If less than infinite resistance

      Repair the short between the circuits.

    • If infinite resistance
  5. Verify a condition does not exist with the component: A6C Fuel Pump and Level Sensor Assembly - Primary
    • Restrictions
    • Debris
    • Contamination
    • If a condition exists

      Repair or replace as necessary.

    • If no condition exists
  6. Replace the component: A6C Fuel Pump and Level Sensor Assembly - Primary
  7. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
  8. Verify the DTC does not set.
    • If the DTC sets

      Replace the component: K111 Fuel Pump Driver Control Module

    • If the DTC does not set

Installed the new lift pump and I still have the same issue. What fuel pressure should I be seeing at idle on the low pressure side and the high pressure side and also how high does the high pressure side run at speeds? I do have a fuel pump driver module on order. Should have tried that first cuz it's a third of the price of the fuel pump but I was just following diagnostic procedures.

Replaced the Fuel pump driver control module and reprogrammed the ECM with all the current updates and now I'm back in business. Even seems to be a little stronger and a little less noisy! Thanks for all the advice. Lesson learned. I'm into it for about $500 cuz i replaced the in tank fuel pump first but I'm not complaining. Would have been way more at the dealership!

Hi 

I got a Chevy 2500 HD with the duramax 6.6L engine and this is what happened to mine, i stop at Orileys for about 5 min and truck wont start, it will crank but not start, didnt had any code befor this, tried to get it running twices and CEL came on, i got a cheap scanner from Orileys (Innova) so i scanned and pops P129F- Fuel Pump Driver Control Module, Fuel Pump Speed Signal Incorrect, and shows 2 more codes for the glow plugs, erased checked for any loose harness, and got it running, the second time was that same day in the afternoon, crank the engine and will start but rough, like if the starter was kicked in all the time. turn it off twice and fire up again normal, it didnt do it for like a month, and again today couldnt start the truck, same codes, couldnt erase it this time so tried to reset ECM by disconect the batteries and it works, but i turn it off and again couldnt start the truck again, will crank but wont start and same codes 2 for glow plugs, and the one P129F for the fuel pump. DOES THAT SOUNDS LIKE A BAD CONTROL MODULE? OR SHOULD I GO STRAIGHT TO THE FUEL PUMP IN THE TANK?  CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME WITH THIS?

I just had the same problem and thought it was the lift pump as well. Had to have it towed to dealership. Found it was the control module. What I found they get overheated and stop working.  Had the same issue with it wanting to start and run but after turning off, I had to turn the key on and off several times to get it to work but that finally stopped working. It was under $400 at dealer to repair but I have a warranty that covered it. From research on different forums the lift pump really doesn’t go bad, just the injection pump and this module. Hope this helps!

Hey, so I think I just had the same failure. 18 Silverado L5P 38k.  At the pump, fill it and crank… no start.  Of course getting a module looks like it’s going to take some time.  But could you tell me where it’s located on the truck?  Thank you in advance.

I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 3500. I keep getting the crank no start with code P129f. I have an Autel scanner and it says that it stores a permanent code of p129f. I let it set for 5 minutes or 3 days sometimes before it will start. Funny part is, after it restarts the engine light goes out. Took it to the dealership twice for this problem and they “say” that code shows no where in the history. What should I do????

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31.     • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
