AstroStart is the brand that one our local aftermarket shops installs and it comes with a lifetime warranty to the original owner if installed by the shop. I had mine in a 99 Dodge Ram and had them transfer it to my 02 1500HD. I also have the optional timer so that my truck will start on its own. The plant that I work in is not close to the parking lot that I'm required to park in, so I set the timer for 10 minutes before quitting time. Not cheap, but well worth it for VT winters that can last from October to April!

I put a Viper 550ESP in my truck. I have put this same unit in all the Chevys Ive had. I have had ZERO problems with any Viper (DEI) product I have owned. Fairly easy to install, it just took a while. You will need a DEI 555L to bypass the GM VATS. Otherwise your truck wont start when you hit the lock and unlock buttons to start the truck remotely. One word of caution. When you put the VATS bypass module in, solder it in. If not the correct resistance values wont be sent to the BCM. Dont use crappy Scotch-Loks or crimp style connectors. They will change the resistance values sent by the 555L to the BCM and the truck wont start. I encountered this problem in my truck and had to solder it in because I tried some small red heat-seal butt connectors. I have an install guide I was given by a friend for Silverado and Sierra trucks if interested! It is in PDF format that can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Free program to download.

what was the price on that unit? is that a two way? that lets u know the vehicle is running?.... my dealer told me the astrostart was a better value then the viper and not much difference? he said the viper had theft deterents which were already built into my truck so there was no point spending the extra coin

AstroStart (5 button model) is around $340 installed. If I try to restart the truck when it is already on, the horn will beep.

 I had the crimestopper installed at a local shop on my '99 for $239.00 works great because my remote locks didn't work before (the battery connects are broken in the remotes). Crime stopper remote are programmed for factory locks. The module can be programmed for 12, 24, or 36 minute run time.

It was -5 degrees this morning and I was running a little late. As I was jumping into the shower I was wishing I had a remote starter for my Dmax when it occured to me that I had a "redneck" remote at my disposal ...

LMAO...

Do you also think that "loading the dishwasher" means getting the wife drunk?

For all of you seeking a remote start, you may also want to check out Compustar. On Friday Im getting the 1WFM unit installed for $265. It has about a 1200 ft range and is one-way.

For about $150 more I could have stepped up to the 2WFM unit, same range as the 1WFM but is two-way with a pager style remote. This will let you know if you are in range to start and will give you confirmation of any action you take. Total price installed is $415.

And finally I could have stepped up to the 2WSS for $515. This is a two-way, spread spectrum signal unit with a range of up to 6000 feet, thats over a mile.

For now all I can afford is the 1WFM, but the beauty of the Compustar unit is that it is upgradeable. If I decide to upgrade in the future to either of the other two models all I have to do is "trade in" my old remote and antenna. The main brain of the system stays in the vehicle and no extra wiring has to be done.

According to their site, all Compustar starters will work with diesel engines. It is possible that there may be an additional cost on top of what I got quoted, maybe there is an additional control module or something. I would think that all it would have to do is have some sort of time delay for the glow plugs to warm. Sounds to me though that the dealer is probably blowing smoke up your a$$.

You can check out all the Compustar info at http://www.compustar.org

There is a Contact section of that site, you can use that to find a Compustar dealer near you. Prices may vary somewhat due to different labor rates etc.

Im getting mine done at Signature Audio in St. Cloud, MN.

Cold snap here in North Idaho this week, it was -24, record low for this area two days ago... I have the 550ESP (now replaced by the 650XL, I think) and it was a lifesaver. I started the rig before hopping in the shower, and by the time I headed out to the truck I had a toasty warm rig waiting for me. The new Viper systems have two way that sends a signal back to you to confirm the action you just made. Didn't make that big of a deal to me...I got mine from Dave Mix at Stereo King out of the Clackamas, Oregon store...you can find killer deals out there on the 550ESP as it is a discontinued model and is well worth the money if you can find them out there. I had to have the 555l adapter as well, I think altogether total cost, installed was about $280, which is killer. Gotta love remote start, and the bonus on the DEI stuff is that you get the alarm as well, for about the same cost as the remotes out there. Oh, and I added the kill switch as well.

    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
