towing with 285 tires

i am getting ready to put some 285s on my 03 2500hd 4x4 and my campers total weight loaded is about 6700lbs will these tires create a problem with towing? and also i was thinking of changing my factory shocks, can any recomend a good shock for towing i dont do any offroading with it thanks

I tow fine with 305's and have made several long distance trips. As far as the shocks your factory shocks should be ok for a few more years,whats your reason for wanting to change them?

i cranked my t bars about an inch just to level the truck a little and then i hauled some plywood and the back ones seemed to want to bottom out i know the weight wasent nothing i had 15 sheets of 1/2 inch maybe it was just me, i have been use to driveing duallys for 5 years and this is the first single rear wheel truck i have owned in a while

As long as you're 285's are load range E, and you inflate them properly (80#) you should be good to go.

A load range D ,285-70-16 is rated at a max load of 3,305lbs@ 65 psi which is more than a 245-75-16 load range E is rated at :thumbs: I used Goodyear MTR specs for this info.

I have towed that much in a 1/2 ton with 285s. It didn't like it much, but the tires were not the weakest link. Suspension was.

 

You should be fine, as long as (as stated above) you make sure they are load range "E", and are aired up around 80psi for the towing. Rest of the time, air them down to around 40...Or they ride too rough in my opinion.

the tires i ordered are not load range e they are rated at 3305@65 psi cold is this tire not suffecent to use in my applacation?

Just air them up, and they should handle the weight...

The OEM shocks are garbage. The sooner you replace them the happier you'll be.

 

285's don't necessarily need to be E rated in order to handle what you want to haul. I have D rated 285's, which actually have a 10% higher weight rating then the 245 E's did.

 

The heaviest thing I ever towed was about 8K, and my truck did just fine. Unless you're talking weights close to the limit you really shouldn't have a problem with 285 D's. I certainly haven't, and I've also had 3K in the bed more then once too.

No Worries at all. Tow away! I towed extensively on my 2k Z71 w/285's no probs. I only have one tow on my Duramax w/285's, but no probs there either.

i heard alot of people complain about the factory shocks and i noticed they dont feel right with a little weight on what would be a good shock for towing i doubt i will be doing any off roading

I'm running the Rancho 9000 adjustables. You can set them up one way when your truck is empty, and then make them stiffer when towing or packing heavy. I definitely recommend them. :loser:

I too like the RS9000 Shocks, had them on my old truck just haven't had the time or money to put them on the new one.

 

Plus Im pondering selling my truck..

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.  
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
