Dog lovers inside please....

I know I haven't been on the board very long, but as you can tell by my signature I am an avid volunteer at rescuing dogs. My wife and I have been volunteering for a couple years now and the rewards it brings are worth every minute of time and evey dime of the money we generously give. That being said, HBO is having a special on tomorrow night about shelter dogs and it follows the day to day activites in the life of a NY shelter. It is a "no kill" shelter but even so, life and death decisions have to be made and it is a harsh look at what rescue work is all about. If you have ever even thought about rescuing or volunteering I encourage you to please watch this special and you will understand how important it is and why we do it.

Some may say they can't watch it because it's too hard to watch, but to you I say that if by watching this you learn to help just one dog or volunteer or give money to save just one dog, the show was worth every minute. To that one dog you save it's worth it! Just my thoughts and I hope that if by just one person watching the show helps save just one dog, this post was well worth it! Thanks for listening!

Me and my wife participate in rescue also. We are currently hosting a Dachsund for a couple of weeks. His name is Sonny. We do transport legs between Nashville and Memphis.

That's AWESOME!! I LOVE to hear things like that. We need more of us out ther who are willing to volunteer just a little bit of time! I've got three shepherds (white pure breed, shepherd retriever mix, and shepherd basenji mix) myself and would probably have more if I had a bigger house..glad to hear about another volunteer! Hopefully this documentary will help some people to just help out in some way or another and that could go for any animal lover not just dogs! It just so happens the show is about dogs, but any animal could be put in that spot! Thanks for caring!

Been thinking of doing that myself. I have an empty acre for a backyard...Could probably take a few Mastiff pups off the local SPCA outlets hands for a while....Course...I might need a fence first.

Are yu going to keep them inside or outside Wingnut?

The SPCA usually asks all adopters if the intendc on keeping the dog theyre adopting inside or out, if you say out, then they won't let you go through with the adoption.

I wuld like to adopt ne, but thats just not possible in my life right now.

I was living (in sin  ) with a girl that worked for the San Diego Humane Society a few years back...So, I do know how it works.

And I said "thinking about it"...Not ready to do it just yet.

I just have to make myself be a little less neurotic about how clean my house is.

While we didn't rescue our dog Dixie through any agency, we did sort of rescue her. She was a stray that my wife found in '91. The vet said she looked to be a year old when we took her to get checked out. I didn't plan on keeping her. I never really had any intrest in such a small dog like that. After taking her home, washing tons of fleas off of her outside, then giving her a bath in the tub, she started to follow me around. It got so bad that she sat at the door whinning when I went to take ashower. I let her in and she just layed by the tub. She was on my heels everywhere I went. After a couple days of that, I was kind of attached to her, and decided not to take her to a shelter. We've still got her today, and I think I can say she has been the best dog I have ever had. She can't see very wall at all now, and doesn't get around too much these days though. Here's a very recent picture of here laying by the fireplace. She loves to be warm.

Wingnut, I see you like mastiffs. As you can see from my avatar, I have one (actually we have 2, but have had a total of 4 throughout the years) named Homer. They are really cool dogs and can't see myself not ever having one.

Dogs are great aren't they.....

I'm the proud owner of 2 black labs, that last one I got from a animal rescue league in Golden CO. Nothing like saving a dogs life...

She has been a great dog and a good companion..

Always glad to hear people doing good!!

I agree cowboy. We just got a 5 yr old springer spaniel (named Jerry Springer) from the humane society 2 weeks ago. He is the best behaved one he got too...

Of my three (white shepherd, shepherd/retriever, shepherd/basenji) the two mutts are the best behaved. Granted the white shepherd is only 2yrs old, but she has the typical shepherd trait...very very protective and has been the alpha since the day we got her as a pup...the other two are 6.5yrs old...

Yeah, some of the best dogs IMO, I used to house sit a couple of them for a flight attendent friend of mine, great dogs...Problem is, I just don't think I could handle them in the house. The would be socialized plenty (I spend most of my time outside, or in the garage), and have a heated place to go, but I would have to get over my clean-freak-streak in the house. Having 400 lbs of drooling, shedding, slobbering dogs inside the house would give me hives.

If they were "outside" dogs only, I would probably already have four of them.

Wingnut,

no they are not the cleanest dogs in the world with the drool altho some are more wet than others. My biggest mastiff (also the one that had the best tempermant) didn't drool much. He was 36" at the shoulder and 270lbs tho. Homer on the other hand is a drooler tho and Candy (the brindle female) is even worse.

They are real attached to their owner's tho and can guarantee in the cooler months, Homer J will be laying on the bed next to me come morning. Good thing we have a king size bed but I am the one that usually gets squashed in the middle.

Yeah....See?....Dogs in my bed....

I would make them their own bed, if need be, but not in mine.

I'm thinking of taking my ex-g/fs Rottie though, he can't stand being inside, and she doesn't ever spend time with him. Great pooch....As long as you aren't a cat. He likes to make yard decorations out of them...He'll be in Better Homes and Gardens next month with "Evergreen Lawn with Shades of Calico".

He weighs about 130-140 lbs...Big for a Rot...Bigger than her by about 30-40 lbs.

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
