This gets confusing.

In 97 a gvw of 8600 was the HD (C6P) 3/4 ton.

The 3500 srw gvw was 9200.

Today the 2500 has the 8600 rating and the 2500HD is 9200. The new 3500 srw is 9800.

So it is an HD in 97 but it isn't an HD by todays specs.

...ok, now I am confused, what does C6P stand for?

Btw, it is 5700 engine, wonder wether that is important for you to know.

Thanks again.

C6P was the option package added to the standard 3/4 ton to make it a heavy duty.

I believe the tranny would be a 4l80e its stronger than the 4l60e.

the 5.7 was the standard engine to come with this truck.

Prior to the new "HD" models coming out in 2001, GM had in the old body style both "light duty" and "heavy duty" 2500 models. The light duty had a 7200 lb GVW and the heavy duty had a 8600 lb GVW. For most years of production of the old body style, the heavy duty had 8 lug wheels vs 6 lug wheels for the light duty. The heavy duty 2500 weighs significantly more than the light duty 2500 due to thicker and taller frame and heavier suspension components front and rear. The big advantage of the heavy duty 2500 was that they came with the 4L80E transmission not the much weaker 4L60E.

The easiest way to tell between the OBS 2500/2500 HD, is the bolt patten on the wheels, non HD 2500s had 6 lug wheels, and 2500HDs had 8. All of the 2500 HDs have 4l80Es, not sure about the 2500 LD.

...gosh, what a nice bunch of people on this forum.

My truck has 8 lug wheels, the manual says it is a C6P.

So, thanks to you guys, now I know my truck is a HD with a 4L80E tranny.

Thanks again all...and have a nice day.

If you want further assurance that you have the 4L80-E just look on the glovebox code sticker, if it has MT1 you've got a 4L80-E. If you had a 4L60-E it would say M30 instead.

You can also look at the placard in affixed to the inside of the glovebox door. If the C6P option was included, it will be listed on this tag.
