Best way for leveling a GMC 2500

I have a 2004 GMC 2500 light duty SB Crew Cab 4X4 and I'm planning to lift the front end about 2". Is it possible to lift the front end with a higher rating (code XG) MAX TORQUE 9054) P/N 15732338 and 39 torsion bar and use the stock key? The stock torsion bar for this truck is P/N 15528965 and 66 (code GL) MAX TORQUE 8782.

The stiffer bars would stiffen your ride especially if you cranked on the bars.

 

You can easily get 1" of lift out of your bars without cranking them much. Depending on how your truck was set-up at the factory, 2" is about the most you could expect with the stock "keys".

 

Personally, unless you really feel you need the slighly heavier T-bars, I would take the cheaper way out and buy some "Ford" keys to replace the stock GM ones. This mod will be ALOT cheaper than replacing the torsion Bars.

I lifted mine almost 2" by cranking the t bars.They were barely cranked at all from the factory.The ride difference is barlely noticable if at all. I believe I went 8 complete turns on the bolts.

Thanks for the reply Shaners, I agree with you i buying a new Key. Does this take a Ford or Green Key? Past posts it's suggested to use a Green Key but I don't know. In reference to t-Bar being slighly heavier is it possible that the heavier t-Bar would need less or the same adjustment with the stock key to get a 2+ inches lift? Is it save to say that the t-Bar would have a mid. flex or torque up and down of its'total torque rating?

You will need the green keys.

 

1/2 tons come stock with green keys and need ford keys for additional t-bar cranking; 3/4 tons come stock with purple keys and need green keys (1/2 ton keys) for additional cranking.

I had the GL code bars on my 01 GMC 2500HD 8.1 extended cab sb, I wanted to upgrade to the torsion bars included with the snow plow prep package. After crawling around under several trucks with this package on dealer lots and then having the guy at the parts counter look them up I found that my bars had a higher torque rating than the ones with the snow prep package. I then ordered a set of the XG code bars, they have the highest torque rating that GM offers but I have no idea what trucks they are offered on. I tried putting the green keys on at the same time but could not get the bars to rotate enough to get them on. I did not gain much lift with these bars but I noticed a big difference when I hooked my 8 1/2 ft Western V plow up. With the stock bars it would drop about 3 inches, with the new bars only 1 inch of drop. If you decide to get them I would recommend gmpartsdirect, I got mine there. Both bars from them was only $15.00 more with shipping than the dealers here wanted for one. You will need the part numbers to order them but it looks a though you have them. The ride is a little stiffer but not bad at all, and my truck sets level.

good info here. one local shop suggested using fabtech spindles for the leveling. i presume this is the recommendation because he 1. wants to make money - which is understandable, and 2. using the spindles would maintain the ride quality (?). Any thoughts?

You can get then from your local GM dealer. They are Gm part # 15592573. GM list them for about 31.55 a piece. You can Find them other places like GMdirect. They are cheaper on there, but not much by the time you pay shipping. i HAVE ALSO HEARD OF PEOPLE GETTING THEM FROM THE Dieselplace.com Hope this helps.

Hey Guys,

 

Dumb question here, so please forgive me in advance...I want to jack mine up too, so... Can I just crawl up under there and wrench on those bolts? Or do I need to lift it off the ground first and go about this a different way? Also, if I decide I went to far, is there a way (besides counting the # of turns) to know when you've backed it out to where it was before?
