NEW YORK (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) said on Thursday that it would recall more than 4 million pickup trucks to replace tailgate support cables that may corrode and fracture.

GM said its recall covers Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras from the 2000 to 2004 model years.

The company said about 3.7 million of the vehicles are in the United States, 325,000 are in Canada, and 93,000 are in Mexico.

Do they reimburse you for repair work that you had already done? We had a 2000 Silverado that snapped one causing a hinge to bend, etc. Basically $140 for parts and labor. I wonder if I can get the back? We no longer have that truck but still have the receipt.

I do have a 2003 Sierra that falls in that range? What do they do replace the cables with something stronger or ???

 That really irritates me that the 99's aren't included. I've replaced my cables once and am about to do it agian in the spring (if it ever comes). If anyone has the part # for the new replacement, please post.

Mine snapped when I was loading my ATV via my tri fold ramp...that was a fun time! Anyway, what I noticed is that a lot of GM trucks have uneven posts that mount to the trucks...IE, the posts are bent on one side and this causes one cable to litterally bear all of the weight on the tailgate...combine this with the fact that the cables fray and rust inside the rubber boot around them and SNAP...they break...usually at the same time b/c one can't support everything if they other one snaps...

Is GM going to reimburse those of us whome had our tailgates smash down into the bumper...which scratched the tailgate up???

If it's an NHTSA safety recall they HAVE to cover the repair, in warranty or not. I get the impression it is just that. I had a 94 Jimmy that was long out of the factory warranty, but GM covered 2 repairs, one was a recall, for the ABS. The other one was a TSB that covered replacing the EGR valve and installing an updated PROM, for free, under the emissions warranty or a special extension on the base warranty. Both were free and I was at least the second owner...

I take that back, looks like GM is doing this as a CYA move, not one suggested by NHTSA. The 2000's would still be out of the 3/36 warranty, so maybe the cables changed in 2000 for some reason to cause the separation of the 99's from the recall group.

Edit: At least GM is calling the trucks back to replace these cables. They could have just as easily said it was a non-issue. Look at Dodge, people are having issues with ball-joints wearing too fast and separating, Dodge is STILL not admitting to anything, and here GM is replacing a $40 set of cables! Go GM, keep safety and customer service/satisfaction #1 and Dodge won't pass you this year for overall truck sales!

bosssho,

I heard (altho I will believe it when I have the money) that IF your truck was in that recall and you have proof of it being done, they will reimburse you. We had a 2000 Silverado that I paid $140 for a repair due to one snapping. Eventhough we no longer have the truck I still have the receipt from the dealer that did the work so am hopeful that I'll get that back.
