Took the wife's 96 Blazer (41000 mi) to the dealer yesterday :( I knew about the rear main seal leaking, but they informed me later in the day the oil pan gasket would also need to be replaced :( The service writer said the insurance adjuster came to inspect and he authorized the full repair.  But the engine needs to be pulled from the vehicle.  What, if anything, should I be concerned about - ie; cooling system, a/c system etc.  Thank you in advance... ;)

Ouch, sorry!

If they have to remove the engine you can think of almost anything that could go wrong. Just make sure they take their time and try to stop in while they are doing the repairs to "check-up" on them.

Pull the engine?Wow that's a new one on me.I always thought that it could be done by pulling the intake and sliding the tranny back.

If someone else is paying for it,let them worry about what needs to be watched for but do yourself a favor and check your oil before you leave the dealership.I don't want what happened to my father be the same thing that you expierence.

Stopped by the Chevy dealer yesterday.  The engine and tranny were on the floor.  The intake was on the work bench, seems it too was leaking...at the rear.  Mech said it wasn't so much the rear main seal after all but since it was all apart now was the time to replace it as well.  He broke the distrib cap trying to remove it, the hold down screw was frozen.  He said insurance would cover that as well.  The A/C system has remained sealed and the cooling system will be flushed and refilled when done.  They said it would be done yesterday, late, but wanted to keep it over night to check for leaks and make sure everything is 10-4 before I get it back.  Cost - Still ? + only the oil filter.  JC

Fireman,

I was just courious, why is the insurance involved with this repair?  I understand that at 41000 miles, that you would be outside of the standard powertrain warrenty.

This looks like an excellent example of what an extended warrenty will do for you!!

Yes, this repair is covered by an extended warranty as I purchased the Blazer used with 29,000 miles on it.  I purchased it just before Christmas 1999.  In this case, yes, I have come out on top of the original cost of the warranty.  Sometimes it pays, sometimes it doesn't.  JC

I got the extended warranty with my truck from the dealer. I know that some insurance companies are doing this as well, Allstate being my carrier. The Allstate warranty was much more expensive than the dealer's and did not cover as much. I guess if it's your only option, you may have to go that way, but it appears to me that the dealer packages are much better.

Well, it's been almost 2 months since the local Chevy dealer here in town repaired the oil leak on the wife's Blazer.  I feel good in reporting:  Nothing has dripped on the garage floor since the repair.  Also, since the intake manifold had to be removed, I have been running regular 87 octane gas with no ping.  Hope this goes on...  Also, everything (knock on wood) is working fine!!!
