Trying to make a homemade flamethrower exhaust kit

Do any of you know if its actually necessary to buy a kit off line so i can shoot flames out the back. It seems to me that i can just stick a spark plug in each pipe and run a switched 12v wire to it to make a spark and ignite the extra fuel in my pipes. Btw, i only have cats no muffler, so there is a pretty good deal of left over fuel in my pipes to be ignited. Any imput on how to make my own would be greatly appreciated.

That would probably work well, assuming you have a carburated motor. It helps if you switch the iginition on and off while revving the motor to get more unspent fuel in your pipes.

If you really want to get fancy; Hook up your switch so when it's pushed, the spark plugs in your tail pipes are energizes and it cuts power to one or two cylinders in your motor (sends fuel out the tailpipe).

Im pretty sure these are illegal pretty much everywhere....

My dad had flamethrowers on his 1949 Ford back in the 50's. He used spark Plugs in the tailpipes hooked up to a seperate coil and switch for power. Since the car was a stick shift with a hand choke, he would shut the car down, choke it, pump the gas pedal, turn on the coils, and then compression start it to force the raw fuel to the tailpipes. I heard some stories about guys tailgating him and within seconds of firing up the flamethrowers they were nowhere to be seen!!! Pretty cool.

I know a lot of street rod guys are injecting propane directly into the tailpipes now and get a really cool flame.

Check out a cruise night or street rod show in your area and check it out!

When you talk about coils, do you mean spark plugs, like are they the same thing? Im probably going to make this today or tomorrow, right after i get my pipes ran. Btw, i have a 98 tahoe if that makes any difference in the results i am going to get, i think i should be alright considering other people say they can smell the gasoline fumes coming from my car when they are cruising behind me.

If your CATS actually have something in them (i.e. aren't hollowed out) sending unburned fuel through them is a bad idea. They will be very, very hot and may plug up.

You definately need to use coils before the spark plugs. Just go to a junk yard, excuse me, recycling center and see if you can get the coil packs from an import or something like that. Had them on a 69 GTO back in the day. Got caught by the POlice and had to take them off. Just run 12 volts to the hot side of the coil and switch the ground, that way the coil will be energized all the time and will provide a good spark. Just remember to get the power for the coils from a sopurce thats switched, only on when the ignition is on, or you may get a surprise when not expecting it. Good Luck and post pics.
