Shifting out of park...

Guys and gals,

I know I've seen this on here somewhere, but thought it would be good to address it again.

On my 2004 Yukon, shifting out of park is impossible without the key in the ignition, and the brake must be used if the key is in the "ON" position. However, in the ACC position, the vehicle can be shifted into any position without any problem. So those of you with kids that like to play in there when you're working on the car listening to the radio or just playing with the keys, just be careful!!

Like I said, I know I've seen it here before, but I haven't seen anything from Chevy/GM about fixing this either....

J,

I reported it about a month ago....Make sure you report it to the customer assistance center and the national traffic and highway safety administraion (ntsha.gov).

It has to be reported to get fixed!

I checked my 2002 monte carlo and it also shifts out of park on the acc. position. At least there is a little button to push in to make it move. I wonder how many other cars or trucks have this problem?

Just verified that my new '04 Silverado Z71 has the same issue, I can't believe this!

I'm just grateful that my two year old son didn't discover this for me, as I have let him play in the truck several times.

Just crazy I tell ya!

Did GM change the ignition switches? I have a 2000 S-10, the Acc. position is one click CCW from OFF. If I turn the key one click CW, to unlock, it unlocks the column, turns on the fuel pump and lights the battery light, that's all it does, no radio. Takes a turn to the next position to turn everything else on.

I think you guys are getting a little too spun up over this. (My opinion, of course.)

If you are worried about a child pulling the truck out of park while playing in the cab when the key is in the ACC position....MAYBE you should pull the key out. Because if that kid is smart enough/strong enough to pull it out of park.....They could also start the truck and drive into the living room.

We won't even get into what that kid could do if you had a manny tranny.

I agree with Wingnut...

Why do you let the kids stay in the vehicle anyhow?....I'm not trying to tell you people how to raise or take care of your kids, but use your heads...what do you do when they hit the power door lock button and lock you out??!!!

The vehicles ALSO come with PARKING BRAKES as standard equipment

You know, regardless of kids playing in vehicles (I'm single so that issue is moot) - I find it very odd that once the ignition is on you MUST depress the brake to shift out of Park, but in the ACC position it will shift w/o depressing the brake.

Tried this in the truck today and sure enough I can shift gears. I guess I don't have a real problem with this, but I think there should be SOMETHING in the owner's book telling you this (maybe there is but I can't find it).

Just my $0.02

It needs to be that way so you can still drive it by starting it in nuetral in the event the lock mechanism malfunctions.

I agree. We've had problems with the lock mechanism in our Suburban. The only way we could move it was to turn the key and shift to neutal then start it.
