Check engine light

My 04 1500 has about 1020 miles on it. At about 900miles i cut out the muffler and welded in a piece of pipe. Today the check engine light came on and is staying on. Could the exhaust cause this? My brother has the exact same thing on his 5.3 and my boss has dual exhaust and neither have this problem. Or could it just be a freak thing? Any ideas thanks!

Gotta get a trouble code out of it before you try and diagnose anything. Borrow/Buy a scan tool or code reader, plug it in to the diagnostic connector under the driver's dash on the left side, follow the prompts, and take it from there. Might be related, or it could be something as simple as a loose gas cap. What about warranty? Can you put it back the way it was and take it to the dealer?

I just realized that you said 1020 miles, I was thinking 900 miles. More than likely the check engine lt and the exhaust mod are related.

Never heard of a muffler being removed causing a check engine light to come on. Your gonna have to have a code pulled to see what it is before jumping to conclusions.
