Anyone regret going to 20s???

Anyone put 20s on their truck and regret it???

I am thinking of putting 20" wheels with 275-55-20 (Silverado SS size) or 285-50-20 wheels on my '02 Avalanche Z-71...wondering how this may affect the ride, handling, mileage, etc...I would be leaving them on during the Winter and Winters can get a bit harsh in Chicagoland as well as the bombed out roads. I will probably be selling my 17" stock wheels and tires to a buddy who wants to move up the stock look on his ride so I can't keep the 17s for Winter...

Thanks,

Bill

I have no regrets. Seen lots of people run good times on these heavy ass SS wheels. I have crappy Goodyear 285/50/20 GTII's. They arent the best tires but they are ok. I just bought a McGaughy 2/4 drop and I cant run it because my tires are too tall. So Im gonna get some 275/45's Bridgestone Duelers before I can re-install it. If I were you, I WOULD NOT get Goodyear tires in 20" rim size. They bounce like basketballs when they are cold, they dont balance out well and wet traction isnt great. Look at some Pirelli Scorpions, Toyo Proxes ST, Bridgestone Duelers. You will thank yourself later, believe me!

If you're goin' to run the 20"s thru the winter, you're going to have to make sure you kick the ice and snow outa them,or it will throw the balance off and rattle your brains  ...you may also want to consider uprading the brakes, the decreased rolling resistance increases the WHOAA!!!! factor......the bling-bling dont mean crap if you cant stop to pick the chicks up :jester:

I run 20's on my SUV and couldn't be happier with them. They actually weigh 5 pounds less than the stock wheels that came on the vehicle. I also run the Goodyear 285/50/20 GT II's... they are inexpensive, provide good traction on dry pavement, and balance well. They suck on wet roads, though. If the Escalade wasn't AWD I would of probably opted for a better tire.

Nice! I think I am going to order Goodyear Forteras today...seems to have a MUCH higher grip in wet, dry AND in snow than the GT IIs or the LSs...longer life too for just a bit more cash...thanks for the replies.

I have Forteras and am very happy with them(285/50's I think). My only complaint is the very edge of the tread looks a little rough. Got used to it. Very quiet on the highway, excellent grip. I gotta agree with citydriver though. My Boss wheels and Goodyears make this thing take an easy extra 30 or 40 feet to stop. Make allowances; better brakes or stop sooner.

I am curious as to why it would actually take longer to stop...I know the MASS is greater but isn't the rubber contact patch larger? The Silverado SS actually stops SHORTER than the stock Silverado and it has the same brakes...no upgrade at all...curious.

As long as you are not skidding (and you shouldn't with antilocks) the tire patch isn't going to be an advantage. In my case the tire/wheel combination is heavier than the stock combination. My tire guy tells me that its heavier by a bunch. Then it gets magnified by the rotation (by about 7 times, I'm told). He tells me it should work out to about 100 lb per tire/wheel on my truck. That's a lot of added weight. Unfortunately for me that's also why my mileage went down about 1.5 mpg when I put them on.

If your tire/wheel combined weight is not much more than stock it probably won't be a problem. Just be careful for a week or so 'till you get used to the new set.

i have the toyo proxes s/t's in a 265/50/20 and it handles, rides, and looks great. also will work well with a 2/4 drop. the toyo's are the best truck tire i have used or sold.
