Custom in dash computer

Hey Everyone,

I am going to install a computer in my dash of my 99' Silverado. I am going to try and integrate the climate controls into the computer and LCD. I was wondering if anyone knew how to simulate this climate control, i know how to use the parallel port and was thinking of programming the interface in Java. So does anyone know how the climate control unit sends its controls to the computer of the truck? Or if anyone has any idea's or input please write back.

Did you ever do this? That would be a really neat idea. I had a computer mounted in my truck that ran off 12 volts.. No converters need or anything. Worked great just had a crapy lcd on it. If I could find a good LCD the computer would still be in the truck.

as odd as it sounds, this would probably be easier on a newer vehicle that uses the new class II data bus system. This system uses one LAN wire through out the vehicle via the BCM to communicate all the cabin controls from lights, to climate, to radio. Not sure if it uses a proprietory languge or not though. No idea how the older truckes interfaced however.
