Amp power?

Recommended Posts

I have a box with 2 - 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch HE subs and want to know how much power to give them. They are 200w RMS max, should I go with an amp that puts out 200w RMS x 2 or can I go with a lower RMS amp? Should I go with a single channel amp with a higher RMS for both speakers?

The people at the audio shops always want to sell whatever is the most expensive and you can never get honest help from them. Any help from yall would be greatly appreciated!

what is the impedence of those subs? any idea what the Continuous RMS is?

I would go with a single amp a nice JL500/1 would be sweet with those subs

are they single voice coil or dual?

ya that amp will be perfect. Its 500w rms and have awesome efficiency. I would wire those two subs in Parallel. You will love it

Is JL Audio pretty good? Im only familiar with the Rockford amps. I was going to go with a Rockford mainly because of the remote bass control, but since JL has that as well (i think) Ill look into them if there any good.

Isnt there a way to wire up 2 - 4ohm speakers so they are only 2ohm?

Ya thats called parallel wiring. and JL has a remote bass controler too (I use mine all the time). Its a JL RBC-1. Rockford has some decent stuff but I personally love the JL amps and subs. You wont be disapointed!!

here is how to wire those subs parallel off a mono amp

if they are single voice coil subs, yeah you can wire it to two ohms.

But if they are Dual Voice Coil Subs, you can only wire two subs to be either 4 ohms or 1 ohm.

edit- haha GF7PE beat me to it

Quick question on ohms. Is there any way to hook up 2 rf power hx2's to a 6 ohm stereo, sounds rare but just wondering? Dual voice coils as well.

nope no way with those subs, in any configuration. If you want that configuration because you have an old amp you want to keep, you might as well just bite the bullet and get a newer amp. You wont find very many, if any, subs that are DVC that will make a 6ohm load. You are going to get a 4 ohm or 1 ohm load out of two DVC 4 ohm subs, and a .5, 2 or 8 ohm load out of 2 ohm DVCs. There arent very many amps that can take a .5 load, so you should really just write that off the list of configurations.

JL makes some really good stuff, it's just a little pricey. the newer JL amps give you the same amount of power from 1-4 ohm. and isn't some of the older JL subs, not sure about the new ones, that were dual 3 ohm voice coils?
