i just got a 2003 2500hd reg. cab longbed, and it has the stock cd player in it. i had a 2000 silverado, in that truck i had a aftermarket deck with mp3 capability. i want to put it in. but my friend who works at the local chevy dealer said if u pull the stock radio out the service engine soon lite will come on and the oil life meter wont work. he had seen the stock radio under the seat with 6 wires still hooked up??? anybody have aftermarket radios in their 2003+ trucks, and any problems like that,

thanks

Nothing to it, the dealer is feeding you some terrible misinformation. The only loss you'll have are the chimes, such as for an opened door, or warnings (low coolant level, etc.) And, if you don't mind paying a bit more for the adapters, you can even have the chimes back. The radio under the seat is the result of an old first-generation adapter which allowed for aftermarket add-ons.

You might dig around the various after-market radio install sites. The premier one, though pricey, is Crutchfield. It is good in that it has all the install kits and some decent support. Very little in the way of discounts:

In my case, I have a Pioneer 6600, added XM satellite, and a kit (I totally forget the brand) that allows the chimes and additionally, this kit has the ability for one to be able to listen to the radio with the door open with NO chimes.

I just bought a system from crutchfield a few hours ago. The extra wiring harness is $40 if you buy the head unit from them. While Cruchfield seems pricy compared to Ebay and non-authorized resellers, they are actually cheaper than Best Buy, etc. when you consider free shipping plus all the harnesses, adapters, mounting kits, etc. that are given free with purchase (and no tax).

Back to the subject, I was assured that all will work fine with the added harness. I can let you know in a week or so. By the way, my first purchase from Crutchfield was nearly 20 years ago, and I still feel they are the best out there if they have the brand you want. They are courtious and helpful, and their support is outstanding.
