Parking Brake Noise?????

Recommended Posts

At times, I have a terrible squeek from my rear end. It sounds just like a rock getting caught in the brakes and squeeking, but when I apply the brakes, it is still there. Backing up does not change it either. Some times it squeeks, some times it doesn't, with no really pattern as to "why".

I have checked the fluid in the pumpkin and it is fine. I have checked the brakes and they are fine. I see no visible leaks or axle seal problems. I have NEVER used my parking break and I have owned this truck since it was new.

In short, I have run out of possible solutions and I am not familiar with the parking break set up on this truck, other than it is supposed to be like a "mini drum" type system. That is the only area of "question" for me. Is something lose or possibly broken in there?

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

GM had a problem with the parking brakes on these trucks from 99-02. There is a clip that comes loose, allowing the brake to self engage and wear out. I brought mine in while still under warranty and they repaired them. I wasn't aware there was a problem with them until after a read a service bulletin and actually tried my parking brakes and found that they wouldn't even attempt to hold my truck.

GET IT LOOKED AT FAST! Otherwise you risk destroying the whole hub if it's the infamous problem with the old style clip on the pbrake. Search this forum for more info. I proactively installed new clip per the TSB on the problem just so I would not risk the possible big problems.
