az'03Silverado Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 I was just wondering. Would a goose-neck trailer be practical with a 1500LD '03 Silverado? With my new job I'm going to have to haul a small cargo trailer around (large single axle or small tandem axle) and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience towing a small (and I mean small) goose-neck with a 1500. The goose-neck or even 5th wheel hitches just seem more stable than a normal platform hitch. I could use a little info/advice if anyone has any. Thanks in advance!
Wingnut Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 My neighbors dad hauls about 6-7k lbs with one on his half ton. He has no problems.
99-2door Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 I see people haul 20 ft. stock trailers with 1/2 ton trucks all the time. Doesn't mean it is a good idea. Every time I have seen a gooseneck trailer hooked to a half ton the rear always looks like it is about to hit the ground. If the trailer is small you should be fine. Installing a gooseneck hitch makes your truck take a hit in resale. People have the idea that a truck with a gooseneck hitch has been worked hard. Especially a half ton with one.
JamesB Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 My brother is currently pulling his 24' 5th wheel travel trailer with his 1500. Only thing is he has the 4.8 and 3.42s. It pulls it, but he says that he has the go pedal buried just to keep 60mph. Needless to say, he is in the market for a new truck. James.
az'03Silverado Posted August 7, 2004 Author Posted August 7, 2004 Doesn't sound like a good idea then. I have a really sturdy frame-mounted hitch (class V) so I think I'll stick to that. I'm only going to need about a 6x12 box trailer so it will probably be a single-axle type with no brakes.
OUMike Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 Hadda neighbor pull a 25' goose neck with his 95' Z71 1500. Constant trouble with the transmission. Not to mention strain on the motor, I think he ended up havin' whole top end redone.
