Questions on 97 6.5L Turbodiesel

My dad just picked up a 97 K3500 with the 6.5L.

Questions:

1. There is a belt driven pump on the right of the engine. A hose comes up from it and runs through the same clamp the AC line does on top of the engine. Some one as plugged this line. What is it's purpose and where should the other end be connected to?

2. How are the positive cables on the dual battery set-up run? Someone has replaced some of the cables and they didn't run them back the same as factory.

3. Does the ECM on this engine use a PROM or is it programable like the gasoline engines. The ECM is behind the glovebox like on the older trucks 88-95.

4. Has anybody here installed an aftermarket overdrive unit to split the shifts on one of these trucks? Would come in handy on long hauls with the low gears.

Thanks

1. Sounds like the Vacuum pump which runs the waste gate control, see if there is a manul controller on the turbo with a spring. If that's the case the pump is not needed,

2. Each battery is grounded to the engine on the same side of the block as the battery. The Positive from the driverside goes to the passenger side then to the electrical system.

3. No EPROM and I believe the ECM is still behind the glove box. If you want an after market preformance program you need a reflashed computer, Heath Diesel has them.

4. I know Gear Vendors makes a unit for the 6.5TD trucks.
